As I walked up the track from the hide I noticed small birds flitting across. Not recognising them, even through binoculars I stood and watched. Eventually they stopped flying and I walked on only to see one fly into a scrub willow bush at the side of the track. I placed my gear on the ground except the camera and crept forward until I was about 10 metres away. I could then see there were three on a branch and they were Long Tailed Tit Chicks. As I watched more came until there were nine and I realised they were going to roost there. I tried creeping nearer partially camouflaged by another Willow and got to within about 5 metres when one flew off. I quickly took half a dozen photo's and then backed off to leave them undisturbed. I have removed an intrusive branch in Photoshop Elements. I must say it is one of my favourite pictures. Just shows you should not put your gear away until you are ready for driving off.

Hi Peter,
A wonderful picture.
Great story/note as well:-).
Very cute.
A good composition.
Very original.

Oh, what a moment! :) great capture!

Peter this is great!

An interesting and amusing composition with great detail in the subjects. You've done very well to be aware and alert to a photo opportunity and this is a fantastic result. Great to see them all huddled up and looking quite soppy.

Image is bright and clear, background ok. I think you've done well to remove the trouble branch.

Good job.

Hello Peter,
This is a very nice picture. The long-tailed tits roost like this even as adults in the non-breeding season. We have the same species in Finland, but our subspecies has white head. I would give you 10 points of this shot, if I could.
TFS and greetings from very cold Finland,

G'day Peter
After comming home from a hard day's night of cooking. A beautifull charasmatic shot such as this puts a smile on one face.
The colours, sharpness and POV are all great. Being in the right place is one thing, but you still have to take the shot! Well done
TFS Paul

What a capture of these Long-tailed Tit chicks!
First class composition with good sharpness and bg, but most of all a good case of carpe diem!
Regards, Ivan

Hello Peter,
This is surely a picture of a lifetime!! You must have been thrilled to see them and to be able to photograph them as well! Really brilliant composition showing this little bunch hunched together. Excellent focus, sharp details and good contrasting background. I love the way three of them are turned "the other way", I suppose they'll be the rebels!
Fantastic composition!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Peter,
What an absolutely adorable bunch.
Wonderful capture of all 8 of them.
I think that some of them facing one way and some facing the other make for a great composition. They are so cute all bunched up together.
Very sharp details and beautiful light and colors.
Loved the story of how you got this picture.
TFS. : )
