I am not really up on gulls but I believe this is a Kittiwake. There were thousands of them nesting, it was an amazing sight as I wandered along the cliff tops in Iceland.

The bird life in Iceland is amazing and it introduced me to a few birds I hadn't seen before, including the Red Necked Phalarope, the great Northern Diver, Oyster catchers (I know these are not rare but I had never seen one), Redshanks and even a Gyr Falcon and the Gyr Falcon's nest (complete with 4 chicks). Sadly the nest was too far away and in poor light so I couldn't get a decent shot (only one poor quality one as a reminder).

----------------------------------------------------
RSPB on Kittiwakes:
A gentle looking, medium-sized gull with a small yellow bill and a dark eye. It has a grey back and is white underneath. Its legs are short and black. In flight the black wing-tips show no white, unlike other gulls, and look as if they have been 'dipped in ink'. The population is declining in some areas, perhaps due to a shortage of sandeels. After breeding birds move out into the Atlantic where they spend the winter.

Hi Karan,

A wonderful family scene. The baby is just marvelous - he still has that fuzzy look. Must be day - moms wouldn't doze off if the children were awake :-) Colors are beautiful with so many pretty shades of grey. Superb details - I love baby's eye and beak and the feathers of mom.

Jane

It looks like mom is catching up on some much needed rest taking care of those little ones. Their perch seems so precarious. It really is a nice shot of them against the dark rock.

This is super Karan. Even though the image is sharp...there is a soft quality to it which befits the subject matter. If this wasn't an almost predestined image...wow...How sweet is that eh? You! I remember teasing you about hedge hogs....and now I feel like the school bully. You are just swell! and of course your work goes with it!
