Sorry I haven't been posting much. I am going through a busy period at work and have had some long days.

This is a shot taken at Richmond where the rut is in progress at the moment. This stag had lost his harem of hinds and was bellowing a challenge to the victorious stag.

Red Deer Information from UK Safari
October sees the start of the rutting season for red deer. The rut is a period when the biggest and strongest male (stag) rounds up a group of females (hinds) for mating. Of course every other male deer wants to do the same, but there's only so many females to go around.

In order to maintain control over a group of females the stag must constantly drive away rivals. The stag announces his superiority over other males by constantly bellowing out an echoing roar, which sounds something like a cross between a chainsaw and a burp. I guess if we had to shout for days on end we'd end up making a similar noise.

Sometimes shouting is not enough, and when contenders approach the females they need to be chased off. Ocasionally fights between males can break out, and this can lead to some serious clashing of those magnificent antlers.

Red deer are our largest native land mammals. They can weigh up to 190kg. In fact they one of only two native species of deer in the UK. The other being the Roe deer.

Hi Karan,

It's nice to see a post from you again!! I can almost hear this stag bellowing. He is not a happy camper. Great timing to catch him in the midst. He looks just wonderful surrounded by the tall dried reeds. Wonderful natural colors and fine details of his face, antlers and coat. A nice natural setting and composition.

Hello Karan,
Good to see you back.
A long time ago I've seen such a scene in real, lying in the grass. It was very cold and when he was bellowing, a lot of steam came out of his mouth. Together with the noise it was very impressive. This photo reminds me of that moment 30 years ago. Fascinating photo from a perfect POV. Technically superb.
Regards,
Peter

Hola Karan,
espectacular trabajo,
bello captura y excelente momento,
tecnicamente sobresaliente,
saludos

Hi Karan. This is a nice close shot of a stag in rut. We just returned from witnessing elk going through the same ritual. The poor fellows run themselves ragged holding onto or stealing a harem. Some can lose up to 150 pounds during rut. Poor fellows. lt is really somewhat amusing to watch. The problem with the elk is that they are difficult to find during the day light hours and are very busy after sunset and just before sunrise. It makes photography tricky!

Nice to see you again here and i hope they aren't working you too much there :)
This is a very beautiful capture from you! The timing is really terrific and the composition you went for here really work with that.
The details are also outstanding and the shallow DOF is spot-on. Very well balanced exposure and great use of the natural light, too.
All-in-all: a gorgeous close-up of this impressive stag!
