This may be only A House Sparrow but its the first one i have seen in the garden for a very long time. I dont think i saw one last year . They have declined in number a lot . I believe it's to do with the new building materials that are used in houses. This amongst other reasons. I would have like a better branch for the picture but all the same i dont mind at all. This simple little bird has made me very happy today.

House Sparrow ( Passer domesticus )Length 14-15cm.

Although the House Sparrow population has dramtically declined in recent years it is still widespread in Britain and Ireland.

This is a common, noisy Sparrow which is one of the most familiar small Birds due to its habit of nesting in buildings.

The Male has grey crown, cheeks and rump, chestnut-brown nape, back and wings, pale underparts and a black throat.

The Female is rather nondescript with streaked buff and grey-brown plumage. The Female can often be confused with a Female Finch.

Small groups of these Birds are often seen sitting on roofs.
Frequnetly dust-bathes.

They usually nest in roof spaces or holes in walls but occasionally builds large and untidy nests in bush.
They usually have between 3-7 eggs, 1-4 broods in April-August.

They feed on seeds, nuts and berries mainly from the ground, plus Insects for their young.

When fed in urban parks they can become very tame often taking food from the hand.

The detail, as always, is very good and the plumage and colours are very nice, never new the back of head was that red though, is it a regional thing?
Good composition and nice OOF background.
Great capture and TFS

How strange,

I have been sat in my window seat watching the Sparrows that have taken over my roof. All I see and hear at the moment are Sparrows and as you can imagine it drives our cats wild, and me a little too at 4:30am but I can think of worse things.
Your shot shows a nice pose although a little over exposed maybe on the branch although that may just be my laptop. I may have to go and take a shot now of the little chaps busy in and out of my roof.

Ciao Nick, beautiful this pose too for a nice sparrow, splendid sharpness, wonderful natural colors and fine details, very well done my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi Nicholas
I never see one sparrow capture great like that!!!
Congratulation for this master shot!

Hi Nicholas,
It is curious that the type of materials used in construction falls directly on the population of the species, but is very interesting to learn of this observation. On the other hand, certainly the element where it posed is a bit rough, but that does not detract from the excellent technical quality of the photo! :) Good work, hope that the number of these birds rise again! Greetings, Thanks for sharing!

Bonsoir Nicholas

Pretty close-up shot of that sparrow. Excellent sharpness and exposure. I like the tight cropping. Idellay BG would be more blurred, but it would also trow more part of the bird in the blur zone. So your may be better with more sharpess in the bird even if BG is a bit to sharp. An excellent image for the pleasure or our eyes. TFS.

Alain

This is a wonderful shot of a familiar beauty Nick, I'm not concerned with the composition at all. Because you are doing it impressively as always. The all-important eye is sharp, the details and textures of its plummages are clearly seen and sharp as a tack.
TFS and have a nice day MF!
Cheers,

Bayram

Hello Nick,
A fine capture of this increasingly less common bird. The details and colours of this male House Sparrow are excellent and the pose and POV add to a fine well composed image with a great contrasting green BG.
Thanks and cheers,
Ivan

Como siempre te digo, tienes una gracias especial captando a la aves Nicholas. Este parece que tiene vida. Algo intenso el color.

Hi Nicholas,
Nicely captured image of this sparrow with a proud pose. The natural light you used really brings out the stunning colours and patterns of its feathers usually not noticed due to its size and nervous nature.Well done.
