Heidal is a valley within Gudbrandsdalen valley, in the county of Oppland in central Norway.

At lower and medium elevations the valley is covered with dense pine forests. Reindeer lichen growing in abundance makes these forests often look white as if covered with snow in summer. Between the lichen, millions of berries and mushrooms, many of them edible, will appear in late summer.

The lichen:

Cladonia rangiferina
Reindeer lichen

Cladonia rangiferina often dominates the ground in boreal pine forests and open sites in a wide range of habitats, from humid, open forests to rocks and heaths. Reindeer lichen, like many lichens, is slow growing (3-5 mm per year) and may take decades to return once overgrazed, burned, trampled, or otherwise consumed.

The mushroom:

Suillus variegatus
Velvet bolete

Like all bolete-like species that mushroom has tubes, and pores instead of gills under its cap. The mushroom forms a mycorrhizal relationship with pine and occurs in the Northern parts of Northern hemisphere. It is edible, but said to smell unpleasant. But it does look pretty and inviting.

The berries:

Vaccinium vitis-idaea

The distribution of Vaccinium vitis-idaea is circumpolar, widespread in northern latitudes and alpine mountain regions. Collected in the wild, the berries are a popular fruit in northern, central and eastern Europe. In traditional medicine the fruits are used for treatment of disorders of stomach, kidneys and urinary tract. They are of a pleasantly refreshing taste and therefore popularly used as jam or juice. In Norway they are also used to make Lillehammer berry liqueur. Reindeer and elk steak is traditionally served with lingonberry sauce. :b

The picture was taken on August 20, 2014, 13:15, at an elevation of approximately 800m above sea level.

Tusen takk for your visit.
Have a good day.

Hello Peter,
I'm sure you were well pleased when you brought this image up on the computer screen. Attractively composed and filled with detail, interesting plants and an array of beautiful color.
Any one of the three would make a good subject for a photo, but you have shown them all in one outstanding shot. Love it!!!

A lovely assembly of lichens, mushrooms and berries from Norway that is not only beautiful to look at but also a window to the flora of distant lands in northern hemisphere, Peter.
Your note gives a wonderful insight into each of the components in the picture.
I love the fresh and rich colours.
Looking forward to regular posting from you.

Lieber Peter,

Lovely picture, perfect for the first page of a book. Congratulation. Saludos.

Hello Peter,
What a beautiful natural still-life arrangement of berries, leaves, lichens and mushrooms. Excellent composition and exposure control in very good overall quality. I cannot fault this image. To the contrary, it is sheer pleasure to view. Very well done indeed.

Hi Peter,
Welcome back! In the past 2 weeks I was on holiday at home in Hungary, so excuse me for my delay with the answer and the visit in your gallery. Beautiful micro-world photo with 3 species, each is wonderful. Color contrast and harmony are fantastic, I love the different tones of the 3 species, and of course the composition with the berries in the foreground and the fungi in focus. Excellent details on the cap surface, and a fantastic photo overall. Huge congratulations. However, I only found Suillus variegatus once, it's rare in Hungary.
Best regards, László

As Luciano wrote this photo it is like a Christmas greetings postcard,
the different vegetation species on the image with the POV you choose and
the way you framed them it contribute to the Christmas greetings postcard effect, TFS

Hello Peter
