Insects in flight-23 :

I present once more the European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominulus, Haus- Feldwespe. Vespidae) in flight, this time with a twist: You notice the two Strepsipteran parasites between the tergites.

Infection of the paper wasp by the strepsipteran or twisted-wing parasite Xenos vesparum Rossi results in a dramatic behavioral change of the host, which culminates in colony desertion and the formation of extranidal aggregations, in which up to 98% of occupants are parasitized female workers. The infected wasps can survive the winter while the noninfected workers will die. The manipulation of the host helps the parasite population to reproduce and find new hosts.
(from: Hughes D. et al. 2004. Social wasps desert the colony and aggregate outside if parasitized: parasite manipulation? Behavioral Ecology 15, 6: 1037).

Parasites -partners for life!

Technicals: 1/3'200 sec, f/4.5, ISO 800, tele 500 mm eq., no flash

Hi Dietrich,
That's class again, great compo, crystal clear photo with the most perfect shutter speed and nice shallow DoF. Very interesting and educative note as well. Great work, congratulations!

Hi Dietrich
It is not easy to obtain such picture quality with an insect in flight.
The wasp is shown with sharp details and with favorable dof.
