Hypocolius ampelinus (Bonaparte, 1850)
Grey Hypocolius

On 3-12-2010 the species Hypocolius ampelinus was recorded from first time in Cyprus. A bird of this species was in a small area in Kavo Greko (eastern Cyprus) for three days. I took a lot of photos on 4 and 5-12-2010. This is my second posting of this bird.

Hypocolius ampelinus belongs to the family Bombycillidae (Waxwings). Some authors place it in a family of its own, the Hypocoliidae.
It is a slim bird with a long tail, slight crest and thick, short hook-tipped bill. Its shape and soft, satiny plumage resembles that of the waxwing. Birds are mainly a uniform grey or brownish-grey colour, with males having a black triangular mask around the eyes.
According Wikipedia, The Hypocolius ranges through the Middle East, breeding in the Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan area, and wintering mostly near the Red Sea and Persian Gulf coasts of Arabia, including Bahrain. It is a vagrant to Turkey, Israel, Egypt and Oman. They fly in flocks and forage mainly on fruits.

There are only a few records of this bird from Israel and Turkey. This was the first and I hope not the last record from Cyprus.

TFS, Ferran

Wow, I'm thrilled to see this Hypocolius in its most beautiful aspect captured by a professional of your calibre, Chris! The picture is technically outstanding and an artistic creation as a whole.
It was a fluke chance that I also shot a female Hypocolius in the little garden of my school in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the winter of 2006-07. I posted five of its pictures here at that time. (You can search them here on TN by inserting 'hypocolius' string.) Of course, they were amateurish in terms of photography, but I was happy with the fact that I had captured this bird considered to be rare in terms of its limited location and habitat and that too in a country in which photography is forbidden. It stayed with us for a couple of days and then flew away.
Sorry for telling you a long tale!
Ram

Hello Christodoulos,
Hope you are well. This s a fine photo once again, Chris.....hope you won't mind calling you, Chris. Once more the bird is perched on the top of a thorny tree. It resembles our shrike family, looks like one if the beak is kept in mind but it is a new bird for me. Th e ashy plumage has been captured well here....thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful bird which seems perhaps rare.....by the way your note is excellent ...take care....warmest regards/Abid

Hello Christodoulos,
Amazing, you seem to be at the right place at the right time. Congratulations to have made pictures of a bird which is just newly arrived on Cyprus. As usual most attractive picture with well chosen composition and subtle beautiful colors. I see that the bird has chosen a spiny surrounding! Bravo again!

Hi Christodoulos,

The branches are framing well the bird. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the Grey Hypocolius. The afternoon light is briging out the colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre

This bird looks majestic perched on that twig, Christodoulos. Lovely close framing and fine isolation in well defined details. Thanks and kind regards,
