Pluvialis fulva (Gmelin 1789). Winter plumage
Pacific Golden Plover

I am posting again a photo of Pacific Golden Plover of the same individual I posted a few days ago, this time in winter plumage. In my WS I am posting also two photos of Eurasian Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria (Linnaeus 1758) in order to show the differences between the two species.
Pluvialis fulva is a medium-sized plover of the family Charadriidae
The breeding adult is spotted gold and black on the crown, back and wings. Its face and neck are black with a white border and it has a black breast and a dark rump. The legs are black. In winter, the black is lost and the plover then has a yellowish face and breast, and white underparts.
It is smaller, slimmer and relatively longer-legged than Eurasian Golden Plover, Pluvialis apricaria. It is more similar to American Golden Plover, Pluvialis dominica, with which it was once considered conspecific. The Pacific Golden Plover is slimmer than the American species, has a shorter primary projection, and longer legs, and is usually yellower on the back.
Pluvialis fulva breeds in Arctic tundra from northernmost Asia into western Alaska. It nests on the ground in a dry open area.
It is migratory and winters in south Asia and Australasia. A few winter in California and Hawaii, USA. This species is a very rare vagrant to western Europe.
In Cyprus Pluvialis fulva is a very rare vagrant with only 7 records.
The 5 records refer to the same bird which was visiting the Paphos headland from 2005 to 2009 (arriving in August and leaving in December).
I took a lot of photos of this bird in 2008 and 2009. Unfortunately we have not seen it in 2010.
