Charadrius leschenaultii Lesson, 1826. Adult male.
Greater Sand Plover

Charadrius leschenaultii is a small plover (family Charadriidae) with a length of 19-22 cm. Breeding males have grey backs and white underparts. The breast, forehead and nape are chestnut, and there is a black eye mask. The female is duller, and winter and juvenile birds lack the chestnut, apart from a hint of rufous on the head. Legs are greenish and the bill black.
It breeds in the semi-deserts of Turkey and eastwards through Central Asia. It is strongly migratory, wintering on sandy beaches in east Africa, south Asia and Australasia. It is a rare vagrant in western Europe.

In Cyprus Charadrius leschenaultii is a passage migrant and a winter visitor but always in very small numbers.

Hi Chris, Superb capture of this Greater Sand Plover my good friend, excellent feather texture with good clarity, fabulous lighting and lovely colour tones, splendid POV a true trademark of yours Hmmm love it, great effort here Chris and very well done,
Best Regards,

Pauly.

A flawless image of the Sand Plover with remarkable sharpness and true colours, Chris. I sometimes wonder how you pull off such wonders with the camera settings you use. At these readings, I would invariably obtain a picture with tons of noise on it.
Anyway, there lies the difference between professionals and rank amateurs, I guess!
Regards.

γνωρίζοντς τη δυσκολία λήψης λόγω και μεγέθους, το αποτέλεσμα είναι εντυπωσιακά καλό, ζηλευτή εικόνα!

Hi Christodoulos,

The eye contact is an asset to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the Greater Sand Plover. The late morning light is giving nice tints to the colors. Have a nice day.
