Maniola cypricola (Graves, 1928) female
Cyprus Meadow Brown

Maniola cypricola is a medium-sized butterfly of the family Nymphalidae (Subfamily: Satyrinae) (wingspan of 40-50 mm). It is an endemic species of Cyprus.

The adult butterflies begin to emerge at the end of April and are on the wing until November in a single generation.
The larval host-plants are various species of the Poaceae family. The butterfly mates in spring, but in common with other members of the Satyridae family in Cyprus, ovipositing is delayed until autumn. The larvae develop during winter and early spring.

Maniola cypricola is a very common butterfly that is widely distributed throughout Cyprus. Recorded in every type of habitat, from sea level to the summit of Troodos. Rests on the ground in the shade of bushes. It is attracted to the flowers of Cistus creticus (Rockrose) and Rubus sanctus (Blackberry). After June it is more common in semi-mountainous and mountain areas, usually in shady locations and near water. In autumn it appears again in the lowland areas, where it returns to lay its eggs after the first rains.
