This species is an endemic: that is to say, it is only found on the island of Cyprus and nowhere else in the world.

The Paphos Blue (Glaucopsyche paphos) was the most common blue butterfly that Ulla and I saw during our week's stay on Cyprus. We saw several every day. They fly from March to May.

This is a male: the female is brown (WORKSHOP). It has a wingspan of about 30 mm. Ulla is posting a mating pair showing the undersides of the wings.

It is probably the most common blue butterfly in Cyprus but we also saw the Short-tailed and Common Blues. The Paphos Blue is not mentioned in any of the current European butterfly books.

The larval host foodplant is not known but we often saw them near or on a kind of gorse bush (Leguminous).

Superb shot Ivan.
Great sharpness and details.
Good composition.
I'm in nearly in the market for a DSLR and the 400D is probably what I'll get.
Cheers
Chris

This is a superb specie Ivan that you captured in such a nice pose! This male looks more vibrant than the female by its amazing color! Like birds do most of the time too. I like this composition a lot and this beautiful BG. The subject is well isolated and it gives a fantastic result! Well done with interesting note and picture in WS. Thanks,

Hi Ivan

Wonderful capture of the Paphos Blue, very nicely composed with a great POV and superb pose, the details are excellent and i love the Blue against the green BG. I am so jealous as I have never seen any of the Blue Butterflies.

Hi Ivan,
Beautiful blue color. Impressive picture from distance of 2 meters. Very nice pov and composition. All settings are perfect.

Hello Ivan,
Blues are among my favourite butterflies. They look like small flying jewels. I like very much the way you presented the wing surface in this one - shiny, yet not overburnt. Also it contrasts nicely with the background. Composition is also appealing.
And additional plus for showing the endemic. But how to tell it apart from other species. Most of the blues are so much similar to each other :-)
Best greetings and TFS!
Michal
