This is a male Eastern Black-eared Wheatear (Oenanthe hispanica melanoleuca). The western subspecies, hispanica, has a russet shade on the head and shoulder. This subspecies is found in the Eastern mediterranean and Turkey.

There are about a dozen species of Wheatear found in Europe, N. Africa and the Middle East. Most of them are strikingly coloured black and white with shades of grey, buff and brown in between. Later I will post a shot of a Wheatear endemic to Cyprus, but this species is less common in Cyprus.

We came across him on our last day when we stopped at the Paphos lighthouse area on the way to the airport. This area is interesting archeologically, botanically and for birds, many of them in passage to Turkey and northwards.

He is perched on a low lamp-post that lines one of the many paths on the site of an old Roman settlement.

Camera hand-held at a distance of about 15 meters.
ISO 200
As the bird was too shy to approach closer, the image was fairly heavily cropped.
After Size reduction, it was sharpened and treated for noise using Neat Image.

Hi Ivan, a very nice photo of this bird, nice contrast black/ blue sky and high definition.
Yesterday I saw Oenanthe oenanthe but it was impossible to approach closer (frustration). Thanks for this beautiful photo.

Hi Ivan.
Perfect composed shot of this elegant bird. In spite of long distance quality of the image is very good. Image of the bird is detailed very nice. Lighting is soft and impressive as well as the delicate colour palette. Is it evening sunlight or natural colour of the feathers? My best regards and TFS.

Not bad for 15m even with the extension.
Another new species for me too.
I like the simple compostion and great sharpnes.

Hello Ivan, despite the fairly heavy crop there is still plenty detail in the picture.
The low point of view is nice, especially since you have good eye contact with the blink in the eye. The only nit might be that there seem to be some jpeg compression artefacts around the bird.
A nice one!
Regards, Jacob

Hi Ivan,

A lovely looking bird that I have not seen. The black and white against the sky is beautiful. Wonderful details, as always.

Hello Ivan,
I can't be sure but this could be the first Wheatear picture on TN. In the process of doing some research on the birds of Middle East after shooting my first Hypocolius, I came across this bird and almost went to the extent of mistaking Hypocolius for a Wheatear!
A well composed sharp image that brings out all the salient features of this bird native to the region.
Thanks and best regards.

Hello Ivan,
Excellent job on a difficult subject, great details especially in the white, thanks for sharing.

Hello Ivan, :)

Lovely bird you have captured here, I'm wondering if it was difficult with the black and white to get the sharpness you did? It's very nice, I like the POV and the catch light in his eye. Very well done, wonderful work as always. Take care.

Hi Ivan

Another lovely capture from you!
You really managed a great shot here, catching it with such a nice blue BG and in such a charming warm lighting.
The catchlight in its eye is adorable and stands out from the black plumage very well and the details are all very nice and sharp.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Ivan,
Very nice shot of this species. Nice (evening?) light and good details. Very sharp image and excellent exposure time taking into account the lens and handheld camera.
Best greetings,
