[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After green, yellow must be the second most common colour in nature. Yellow flowers attract insects and yellow insects can recognise each other.

Combined with black, blue or red, insects can display yellow as part of a warning colouration.

This butterfly, the Clouded Yellow (Colias croceus), was the most common butterfly in Cyprus when we were there for one week earlier this month.

Like all yellows of the Pieridae family of butterflies, it is very active and after warming up in the morning it rarely settles and when it does so, it settles for only a short period of time. It never settles with the wings open.

The Clouded yellow uses various leguminous plants as the larval host food plant and spreads northwards from the Mediterranean region, where it is common, to as far north as Sweden in late summer, where it is rare.

ISO 200
Taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 2 meters.
Cropped by about 30%.
After size reduction the image was sharpened once and treated for noise using Neat Image, then sharpened again using Photoshops unsharp mask.

Hi Ivan,
This is one of the finest butterfly captures I have seen in the recent times on TN.
The point of view could not be better.
The focus is truly razor sharp, the colours are amazingly beautiful and the details are as perfect as perfect can be.
The yellow flower within the frame supplements the composition beautifully.
And that is what I would call the real "bokeh" BG :-)!

Hi Ivan,

Excellent shot with SUPERB sharp details
Beautifull compo, POV, DOF and colours

TFS Thijs
ps Thanks for id (Rhagium bifasciatum)

Hej Ivan
What a colorful butterfly you have here. Details, pose and colours are really nice.

bonjour ivan
il me semble bien precoce ce beau colias.
la photo est parfaitement realisée,nette colorée et bien composée.

Hi Ivan,
I really like those yellows. And you've taken a pretty sharp picture. Admirable with the 300 mm.
One disadvantage with the tele in stead of macro is the larger depth of field. Now the background takes a lot of attention. I tried a little workshop. Let me know what you think.

Hi Ivan

What a superb macro work! And its taken with a long prime and an converter...huh...what an amazing result!
I really love the impeccable sharpness you managed to get on the entire butterfly and also the spot-on exposure you managed here. Due to that, all the colors are vibrant and splendidly saturated!
The DOF is also exceptional and blurrs teh BG superbly, fact enhanced also by the great bokeh of your excellent lens.
Charming composition and good note (i particularily liked the fact that you stated the distance to the subject :) )

Bravo and TFS

Hi Ivan
This is a very clear shot of this butterfly!
And their bright yellow makes honour to their name. It creates a great contrast with the background.
Great focus and sharpness on the image.
I like very much also the composition made with all the branches and other flowers.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
