[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This satyrid butterfly (Hipparchia cypriensis) is an endemic species in Cyprus, which like the Cyprus Blue, is found only on the island of Cyprus.

It is very similar to the European grayling (Hipparchia semele) that does not occur in Cyprus. Its larval host plants are various species of grass.

We saw this flying around the amphitheatre of the Roman ruins in the lighthouse area of Paphos, an area otherwise famous for not only its ancient ruins and mosaics but also for migratory birds in the spring.

This shot was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 1.8 meters. As it was taken against the light it had to be treated for shade reduction after cropping byabout 30%.
This image was also selectively sharpened.

Good morning Ivan,
you deliver just the next candidate for a Theme on Satyrinae which I would like to create soon (I gathered pictures over the last weeks and I think that there will be enough soon).
You show a well focused and sharp picture of this particular Hipparchia species. They are hardly detectable when resting.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan,
Splendid shot of this beautiful looking butterfly with such detailed patterns on its wings. I see it for the first time. Great lighting and exposure and you have captured it in a nice angle and pose. Lovely colours and I like your POV to portray it. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello Ivan,
I really like this shot a lot.
It is of perfect sharpness and has a lot of nice details, but after all it's well composed. Especially the colors are very crisp on the main subject and the bokeh is great and in the same color tones, leading towards a very harmonious compo.
Have a nice weekend ;-)

Hello Ivan,

Again a great capture! Very nice composition. Great sharpness and wonderful colours! The colours of the rock suit very well the colours of the butterfly.
Have a nice day,

Hi Ivan,
great use of the light here and as usual very well done with the selective sharpening. I also like the patch of stone you have in focus too, it adds some very nice detail. The composition is excellent.

Hello Ivan,
A well illuminated picture even shot against the sunlight. Sharp focus and great color clarity. Lovely pov and composition.

Hi Ivan,
Great capture of this beautiful butterfly!
Very good nuance and luminosity.
Well done!

Hello Ivan,
Nice species captured excellently by your splendid camera work.
I love the color of blue in this butterfly, thanks for sharing.

Ciao Ivan,
davvero una bella immagine, dai colori naturali, nitida e ben composta.
Non conoscevo l'Hipparchia cypriensis.

A pleasing effect. The rock vs the insect. We know instinctively that they have different textures so the mind wants to establish this by giving feel to the appearances. One is course and hard and th other now appears soft and fluffy. This accentuates the texture. Also the completely different yet complimenting colour patterns are an interesting puzzle...The background thrown out of focus and you are presented well.

Hello my friend Ivan,
This is a great image of butterfly well captured and composed!
excellent pose with perfect sharpness, lovely colour and so much details always from you!
well done and have a wonderful weekend, Ivan!

Hi Ivan,
another nice shot from Cyprus. I think both of us like the island very much. Especially its different fauna. I fallow identifications by you. I am a mammalogist and I can identify their species and a few animals from other group. How can you manage successfully systematics. Probably not only from books, but also... ? Thanks for showing them with systematics to us. best wishes

Hola Sr. Ivan.- Exelente enfoque de esta pequeña Mariposa. Esta especie es muy popular aqui, se le conoce con el nombre de "Gallito"
Finos y agradables los colores y la pose es muy bonita tambien.
Saludos Luis52.

Hi Ivan
Very nice shot. Unusual POV. Good sharpness. I like background mosaic. Nicely composed with butterfly on the left. There is also one more important, maybe the most important thing - interesting endemic species

Hi Ivan,
A beautiful capture of this satyr. Very good detail even there was BG light. Why didn't you used the fill flash here? Anyway a very good composition and also a very good POV. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan.
What an impressive close-up butterfly picture. Subject (wonderful butterfly and so attractive stones) is awesome. BG is wonderful at highest range and suitable for main scene absolutely. Sunlight and cute shadows decorate the image perfectly. Diagonal composition of the picture is key point of the shot. Great job and best wishes.

Hello Ivan

Excellent close-up of this butterfly, with a very fine POV,
DOF and framing, excellent light, great focus, sharpness, details, TFS
