The Cyprus Wheatear (Oenanthe cypriaca) is endemic to Cyprus, which implies that it is found nowhere else in the world and apart from when it overwinters in East Africa and in passage in the Middle East.

It is the only breeding wheatear in Cyprus and is relatively common in bushy macchia habitat.
The female looks similar but the white parts a slightly more buff-coloured.

This shot was taken on the Akamas peninsula in NW Cyprus. Notice how it keeps a steady grip on its perch by twisting its left foot round the tip the twig.

ISO 200
Camera hand-held at a distance of about 12 meters, necessitating fairly heavy cropping.
After size reduction the image was sharpened by means of unsharp mask at 40%. And the BG treated for noise.

Hello Ivan,
Very nice shot. Even after heavy crop this picture still sharp and well exposed. Lovely eye contact and blurred background. Very well done and tfs.

bonjour ivan
encore une reussite,on arrive même a voir l'oeil malgres la couleur noire de sa tête.
j'aime beaucoup sa pose tout en haut de l'arbre,j'imagine que cela devait bouger un peu et pourtant la nettetéest parfaite.

Hi Ivan, You made a beautiful photo from this blak and white bird (dificult conditions). For a little bird, to do a good photo from 12 m. is a performance!
TFS, Dan

Hej Ivan
Nice shot of this Cyprus Weather. Details are still good conceding heavy crop. Pose and BG work well making this shot attractive :)

Imorgon ska jag åka till en ett nytt ställe som heter Gällstaviken och ligger 45 min från Stockholm. En kille från jobbet sa att man kan se Rördrom och lite till. Hoppas jag hittar dit :) och att vädret är OK.

Ivan, this is a great photo. The calm coulours in the BG and the contrasting colours of the bird puts the viewers focus right on the spot, the birds eye with a reflection and all.

Nice details in the plumage and a great POV enhances this even further!

Hi Ivan,

Beautiful capture of a beautiful bird. The blacks and white are wonderful. Amazing how the eye sparkles thru. Lovely pose and beautiful bg.

Very impressive capture from a sizable distance, Ivan. You always manage such shots very well.
The Cyprus Wheatear is a handsome black and white bird. You have captured it in a very attractive pose with its head lifted high. I can see its steady grip on the twig with both feet.
Does teleconverter work without a hitch on your 300mm? I have been wanting to go for one, but the feedback to my query on the Forum has left me more confused than ever.

Hello Ivan,
This bird is a true beauty! What an amazing capture of such a wonderful creature! Congratulations! (I'm jealous right now :)

Hi Ivan,
Good capture; never saw this beautiful one...

Hi Ivan, splendid black and white bird in great pose with wonderful details, very well done, have a nice week end, ciao Silvio

Hola Ivan,
Una belleza de imagen, el pájaro muy bonito con gran nitidez con una luz y fondo muy agradables. Saludos

Hello Ivan!
I am really surprised that there is an endemic bird species on Cyprus. I had no idea that about that. On the other hand I have to confess that I have never seen this species before. Very beauty picture. I like colours of this bird, even if it is mainly "black and white" ;>
By the way, is this species similar in size to our Parus species or bigger, eg. like Turdus?
TFS and have a nice day!

Beautiful detail in the white plumage, nice shot!

Hi Ivan,
really a great shot of this bird. I like the POV and his position just at the end of branch. The light on the eye is good too.

Hi Ivan

Hello Ivan,
a very nice and pleasant photo of this attractive bird. Beautiful colour combination in great clarity presented by you.
The sharpness and clarity is never a question in your shot.
Excellent shot and real salutation for you in your bird photography.

Ohhh... A masterpiece work of this Cyprus beauty taken under weak light conditions from a wonderful POV. It seems that the shallow DOF with f/5.6 have isoloted the subject well MF!
TFS and have a nice week Dostum Ivan!
