Apharitis acamas (Klug 1834) (synonym Cigaritis acamas)
Levantine Leopard

Apharitis acamas is a species of the family Lycaenide with a wingspan of 25-35 mm. It is a species of the Middle East, Turkey, Iraq, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The population in Cyprus has been described as an endemic subspecies, Apharitis acamas cypriaca Riley, 1925.
The adult butterflies start to emerge in May and are on the wing until the beginning of November in three generations.
Apharitis acamas is the only butterfly in Cyprus that has not been positively associated with a host-plant (though in captivity eggs have been laid on the woody parts of Sarcopoterium spinosum (Thorny Burnet). Eggs are laid near colonies of Crematogaster ants. The caterpillars spend much of their time in ants’ nests and have been bred in later instars inside artificial nests with no access to plants, living on ants' brood (Sanetra & Fiedler, 1996). Indications are that, at least under certain circumstances (as surmised by Larsen & Pittaway (1982)), the caterpillars might spend their entire life-cycle in the ants' nests.
In Cyprus Apharitis acamas is a rare and local butterfly. Recorded in pine forests, on agricultural land, sparse maquis, garigue and phrygana from sea level to 900 m. Prefers phrygana on degraded, clay-like ground with small bushes, mostly of Sarcopoterium spinosum and various herbaceous plants. Perches on top of small bushes, dried grass and sometimes on rocks. Not easily put to flight, even if closely approached. It has a fast and erratic flight and often returns to its original perch. Although it rarely visits flowers it is attracted to those of Chrozophora tinctoria, as well as the thistles Echinops spinosissimus, Cardopatium corymbosum and Carlina involucrata cyprica.

In the photo a female perches on Sarcopoterium spinosum.

Regards, Christodoulos

A wonderfully displayed butterfly showing. Sharp detail and beautiful colors. Great DOF and very pleasing soft lighting, allowing us to see the true beauty of the butterfly.Best regards Siggi

Such a fine macro study of this beautiful b.fly under ideal illumination Christodoulos, the f/11 provided enough DOF to capture the whole fly in sharp focus, while blurring the BG nicely. Good, natural colours and a very good job MF.

Hello Christodoulos,
Was thinking about an Asian species looking at your picture. We don't have this most beautiful Lycaenid in Central Europe and I must say that I would be delighted to see once one of this species. Your picture is well framed, the pose of the butterfly special and permits to see every single detail of the wonderful silvery wings. Very well done.
Thanks and kind regards

Amazing details with wonderfully captured lighting , Christodoulos. I like the pattern that I have never seen before.
