Ovis aries ophion, Blyth 1841 Agrino (Greek Αγρινό). Cyprus Mouflon Cyprian Mouflon, Cypriot Mouflon,

O. orientalis ophion
Ovis gmelini ophion

The mouflon (Ovis aries orientalis group) is a subspecies group of the wild sheep Ovis aries. The mouflon is thought to be one of the two ancestors for the modern domestic sheep.

Today mouflon inhabit the Caucasus, northern Iraq, and northwestern Iran. Originally the range stretched further to Anatolia, the Crimean peninsula and the Balkans, where they had already disappeared 3,000 years ago. Mouflon were introduced to the islands of Corsica, Sardinia, Rhodes and Cyprus during the neolithic period, perhaps as feral domesticated animals, where they have naturalized in the mountainous interiors of these islands over the past few thousand years, giving rise to the subspecies known as O. aries musimon (European Mouflon) and Ovis aries ophion (Cyprus Mouflon).

Ovis aries ophion is an endemic subspecies of Cyprus. It is the biggest animal of the Cyprus fauna. It is a strong, well-made and beautiful animal with a red-brown short-haired coat and a dark back-stripe. The males are horned. The horn is curved in almost one full revolution (up to 85 cm). The breeding male has darker coloration and light colored saddle patches.

Ovis aries ophion is a flexible animal and moves very quickly even in the steepest areas of Paphos Forest where it lives. It is a shy animal and is very difficult for people to approach it.

Based on the available information, it appears that in the past Ovis aries ophion was abundant, at least in all the hilly or mountainous areas of the island. In excavated mosaics it appears that mouflon were well-known during the Roman times, and were also mentioned in the medieval texts of various visitors as “ram” or “wild sheep”. In many cases it is mentioned in the descriptions of hunting trips organized by the aristocracy of the time.

Cyprus Mouflon was nearly extirpated during the 20th century. Today it is a strictly protected species. Its population is estimated to 2500-3000individuals.

The Cyprus Mouflon is featured on the symbol of Cyprus Airways, as well as on the 1, 2, and 5 cent Cypriot euro coins.

Hello Christodoulos,
Fantastic photo of this meeting with the Mouflons. Great sharpness, details and very beautiful camouflaged colours.

Hello Mr.Christodoulos,
Beautiful animal.Excellent capture.Nice color and sharpness.
In such dry corn field a few green sticks(plant)standing just middle of the frame and taking a good percentage of concentration. So,if a fraction of second's delay would give those animals to go ahead little bit infront and green sticks would come behind(in south-east corner). What you think?
It's just my opinion/thinking.If don't like just ignore it.
Thanks for your great contribution here in TN,
Kind regards,

Ciao Christodoulos, great capture of lovely trio in a beautiful ambientation, splendid light and wonderful natural colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hi Christodoulos,
照的很清楚 也很動態畫 看起來真美
1/1250 真是不簡單的照法 角度也特別 真得很棒

Hallo Christodoulos
This is an animal that we do not see often and seeing them in their natural habitat and in running motion makes this image even more special. To me the prettiest part of this Cyprus Mouflon is their horns that are so beautifully shaped. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hello Christodoulos,
Love the light here and the fine earth-colors of Mouflons in their environment. Not an easy shot, but as usual you did well.
Thanks, have a nice weekend

Hi Christodoulos,

The vegetation is framing well the animals. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the mouflons. The good luminosity is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.
