Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus, 1758) & Thymelicus acteon (Rottemburg, 1775) feeding on Onopordum cyprium
Painted Lady & Lulworth Skipper

Vanessa cardui is a medium sized butterfly in the family Nymphalidae . The wingspan is 50-65 mm. It is a butterfly with a very wide range. Is one of the most widespread of all butterflies found on every continent except Antarctica and South America. It is a migratory species, known for moving in large numbers.

In Cyprus, is a very common butterfly recorded in every type of habitat from sea level to the summit of Troodos. As a result of its migratory behaviour it appears suddenly, as vast numbers pass northwards through the island. One such migration, in March 2001, was estimated to number many millions of butterflies (John 2001). This was followed by another wave in May of the same year which succeeded in arousing the interest of the mass media.

There are many recorded host-plants from various families. In Cyprus, it has been observed as ovipositing on Echinops spinosissimus, Onopordum cyprium, and Ptilostemon chamaepeuce of Compositae family and Lavatera cretica of Malvaceae family. The larvae live singly in a protective ‘’tent’’, which they make by joining host-plant leaves together with a silken net. During the winter months, in lowland areas, pupae and large numbers of larvae, at all stages of development, are very common, especially on Lavatera cretica, a very common weed in cultivated areas and gardens all over Cyprus. It is on the wing throughout the year in successive, overlapping broods.

Thymelicus acteon is a small yellow butterfly in the family Hesperiidae (Skippers). The wingspan is 25-30 mm. It is a species of central and southern Europe, North Africa, Turkey, the Middle East, Iran and Iraq.

The larval host-plants are various species of the Poaceae family. Eggs are deposited in groups within dry sheaths on the host-plant. Newly emerged larvae immediately enter hibernation within a small silken cocoon but probably emerge to feed on mild days during the winter. During development the larvae live within leaf tubes constructed by joining together the two edges of a host-plant leaf. The adult butterflies begin to emerge at the end of April, remaining on the wing until the beginning of July

In Cyprus Thymelicus acteon is a common butterfly recorded in a wide variety of habitats from sea level to 1100 m. It is much more common in the lowland areas up to 400 m. Usually found in small groups and it seems to prefer locations with tall dry grass.

Hi Christodoulos,
I posted the relative of this Vanessa cardui. They have the same colorful marking. You had a great opportunity to get two butterflies in focus at the same time. Well seen against soft background. TFS,
JC
