Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758

Papilio machaon is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae with a wingspan of 65-80 mm.
It is a species with a very wide range. Found throughout most of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America. In Cyprus it is represented by the eastern Mediterranean subspecies, Papilio machaon syriacus Verity, 1905.

In Cyprus the adults start to emerge early in February (occasionally in January) and are on the wing until November, producing at least four generations. Overwinters as a pupa. Final-stage larvae have been found in December.
The larval host-plants are mainly species of the family Apiaceae. In Cyprus, Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) is preferred. Early stages of this butterfly have also been found on the following plants: Apiaceae: Coriandrum sativum (Coriander), Daucus carota (Wild Carrot), Ammi majus, Opopanax hispidus, Ridolfia segetum, Ferula communis (Giant Fennel), Glaucosciadium cordifolium. Rutaceae: Citrus limon (Lemon Tree) and Ruta chalepensis (Fringed Rue).
A common butterfly found in a wide variety of habitats and with a very wide distribution in Cyprus. Observed in maquis, garigue, phrygana, forests, cultivated areas and riverbeds, from sea level to the summit of Troodos. It is much more common in the lowlands and intermediate elevations, mainly close to crops and damp places where its main foodplant fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) thrives.

Spectacular effect 3D and a very impressive sharpness,i like the total details despite the difficult light and the wings position, maybe you could pump up a little the colors, but no problem, this is a great masterpiece! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Amazing capture Christodoulos!! Its as if the image is divided in to two distinct colinear planes, one formed by the nice pastel coloured butterfly and the other by the BG plants.

Hello Christodoulos,
One of the most beautiful European butterflies which is always a fantastic subject for the photographer. You had this very subtle colored background with the fine colored red and blue Boraginaceae-flowers which makes the picture very appealing.
Amazing for me to see them already in February. We have to wait..
Kind regards
