Aeshna mixta Latreille 1805
Migrant Hawker

I took this photo with a 500 mm lens from a distance of 4 m. Then I took some photos using a 100 mm lens from a distance of 80 cm. In my WS I am posting one of these photos for comparison. The photo with the 100mm lens has better detail but the BG is more complicated. Any comment is welcomed.

Aeshna mixta is a large dragonfly in the family Aeshnidae.
The male has blue marking on the abdomen and a characteristic T shaped mark on the second segment of the abdomen. The upper part of the eyes is blue and the lower is brown. On the thorax there are two greenish-yellow stripes separated by dark brown areas. The markings on the side of the thorax are different from the markings of the very similar species Aeshna affinis which has greenish yellow sides of thorax with fine black lines.
The female is brown with yellow or yellowish-blue markings.

Aeshna mixta is found throughout central and southern Europe, north Africa, the Middle East and across Asia to China and Japan. As it is a migratory species it can occur outside its normal range and in recent years it has been spreading northwards. It has been seen on the wing in all months of the year but most commonly from July to Late October or early November.

In Cyprus Aeshna mixta is a local species found at costal wetlands mainly from September to November.
