Chazara briseis larnacana (Oberthür, 1909). Male
The Larnaca’s Hermit

Chazara briseis (Linnaeus, 1764) (The Hermit) is a species of southern Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia to China. The subspecies occurring in Cyprus is the endemic Chazara briseis larnacana (Oberthür, 1909).

Chazara briseis larnacana is a butterfly with a wingspan of 55-65 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is dark brown, with a cream-coloured postdiscal band with two indistinct ocelli on the forewing. The underside ground colour is light grey. On the forewing there is a wide, cream-coloured postdiscal band with orange shading and two ocelli. There is also a black mark in the cell. On the hindwing there are two wavy grey-brown bands; the discal one is disjointed while the postdiscal one is continuous.
The female is usually larger than the male and has larger, more conspicuous, ocelli both on the upper and underside. Usually the discal band on the underside of the hindwing is continuous. In some female specimens, the cream colour is replaced by orange-brown and the grey with grey-brown. This form, known as ‘pirata’, is very common in Cyprus.

The adult butterflies emerge in May and are on the wing until November in a single brood. Overwinters as a larva. Oviposits on various plants of the Poaceae family. Recorded as ovipositing on dry grass in autumn, before the arrival of seasonal rain.

It is a very common butterfly, found throughout Cyprus. In May it is very common in lowland areas, but less common in areas above 500 m. In the summer the numbers in the lowland areas steadily decrease while in the mountains there is a corresponding increase. Recorded in phrygana, garigue, maquis, valleys and forests, from sea level to the summit of Troodos. Rests in shade, with wings closed. Frequently alights on the ground and particularly favours steep-sided banks of hillside tracks, from which it is easily disturbed. Feeds mainly on flowers of plants of the Compositae family such as Ptilostemon chamaepeuce and Onopordum cyprium.

Hello Vanni

Is that a form of thistle or the special Mediterranean flora which is common to that specific area? The butterfly looks fine on its perch. Well done!
