Scientific name: Saponaria cypria
Common Name (English): Cyprus Soapwort

An erect or spreading perennial, 8-20(-35) cm high, with a thick, branched woody rootstock. Basal leaves loosely clustered, glabrous or thinly ciliate at base of petiole, spathulate, obovate or oblanceolate, 2,5-5 cm long, 0,5-1,5 cm wide. Cauline leaves distinctly smaller and narrow, the upper densely glandular-villose. Flowers solitary, or in lax cymes, occasionally congested, opening in the evening, closing about noon of the following day. Calyx cylindrical, about 2,5 cm long and 0,5 cm wide, densely glandular-villose. Petals pink, 3-4 cm long. Capsule cylindrical, about 2 cm long, 0,4-0,5 cm wide, mostly concealed by the persistent calyx, opening by 4 deeply cleft, subacute teeth. Seeds compressed, reniform, about 2 mm long, and a little less in width.

Habitat: On screes and rocky mountainsides, on open or under pines, or by streamlets. Confined to igneous formations.
Altitude: (1000) 1350-1950 m.
Flowering: July-October
Endemism: Endemic to Cyprus

I must say, what an unusual yet very beautiful flowering plant you have presented to us. I admit I have never seen anything quite like it before, as it has some pretty unique looking features. The vivid colors are simply gorgeous while the vertical framing is very attractive. TFS.
