Macrovipera lebetina (Linnaeus, 1758)
Blunt-nosed Viper.

I found this Viper this morning, next to a small rock pool with rain water. It was waiting for birds. See my WS for the entire scene.

Macrovipera lebetina is a venomous snake (Viper) in the family Viperidae up to 180 cm long. It is found in the Middle East and western Asia to north India and in parts of North Africa. The nominate subspecies was restricted to Cyprus in 1928 by Mertens and Müller.

In Cyprus Macrovipera lebetina is a common and widespread snake found from coastal areas up to higher beaks of the mountains.
It is highly venomous and its bite is very dangerous. It can cause death if not treated promptly.

This is quite a long and thick Viper. Nice photo in difficult light. The distinct triangular head coiled back in typical hunting pose. Well done and TFS.

Hi Christodoulos,
Wow, first time to see this venomous viper which is so camouflaged that its skin pattern is just like a stone dotted with fallen brown leaves. Gorgeous composition, nice lighting and splendid natural colors. Well presented and focused. Very well done, and thanks. Best regards!

Hello Christodoulos,
Your snake is so well camouflaged that at first I didn't notice the shot. Interesting picture of a quite venomous snake which I wouldn't approach too closely.
Lucky to have seen one!
Kind regards
