This water plant originates in South Africa, the leaves are edible and sold there in the markets. The unique flowers and leaves float.I do not know much aobut it, other than it is underwater except for the floating inflorescences and leaves. It grows in winter-rain areas of South Africa. In ponds that dry our in summertime, its tubers will sprout again after rain return. Aponogetonaceae is regarded as relatively primitive of the plant families.

Hi Ori, beautiful shot, great details, cheers, Luís.

A very good photo. Perfect DOF and the water provides a great contrast, making the flower stand out well.

It looks like a different kind of orchid, but obviously it is not. I have never seen this flower before. Very beautiful picture.

Hi Ori

A remarkable capture of what is locally know as "waterblommetjies". Directly translated it simply means "water flower" and it is cooked in a tasty dish called "waterblommetjie bredie" or stew.

- 1.5kg. breast of mutton or lamb, cubed.
- 2 bunches of waterblommetjies.
- 2 onions, chopped.
- 1 large cooking apple, cored and sliced.
- 4 potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced.
- 1 bunch of sorrel, chopped. (Optional).
- 1 cube meat stock.
- 1 glass, dry white wine.
- 1 teaspoon sugar.
- 1 teaspoon salt. (Or to taste).
- ½ teaspoon black pepper.
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil.

To make

1. Remove the flowers from the stems and rinse thoroughly in salted water.
2. Rinse again in fresh water making sure that no sand or bugs remain.
3. Set the flowers aside to dry.
4. Brown the meat in the cooking oil.
5. Add the onions and stir until soft.
6. Add all the remaining ingredients, including the waterblommetjies, cover and simmer for around 2½ hours, or until the meat is tender.
7. NOTE 1: Do not stir the (bredie) stew too often or you will break up the flower heads.
8. NOTE 2: Some people prefer to add the waterblommetjies to the bredie 30 minutes before the end of the cooking time. This results in a slightly crunchier texture.

Combine this true South African specialty with your photo and you have a tasty meal that looks magnificent as well.

Excellent work and TFS.

Thats realy nice capture.

Hi Ori.
Bellissimo macro. Ottima composizione e ottima esecuzione.

Greetings from Lodz,

Beautiful picture of the flower. The colours look charming.

Hi Ori,
Amazing that this photo was featured on your profile page!
Just last night someone at our camera club showed a photo of this and wanted to know what it was.
I said I would find out,but wasn't sure where to start looking,then....Voila!
Thanks for sharing this awesome shot.

Hello again. Lovely photograph...I do have a couple of questions for you...as I am a novice. I see a reflection of the petals behind...is the flower lying laterally? Is this a glass background? I'm trying to figure out the white specs in the black background also. Could you give a bit of info on where you took this? Thank you.

Very LoveLy pictureand beautifull colors

this snow-white photo of aponogeton distachyos is very appealing!
Here in South Africa - common name Cape pond weed, Waterbloomtjie is endemic to the south-western and southern Cape. The flower buds are used for the traditional Cape Dish Waterbloomtjie-Bredie .

Kristo Pinaar:"It grows with its rhizomes in the mud, deep under the water surface, which enables it to survive, should the water dry up. The leaves and flowers which grow from the rhizomes have long stems, allowing them to drift on the water."

It is not often found in garden/fish ponds, it tends to take over - and it is an awful job to clean out the mud and rhizomes.

However, looking at your beautiful flower - may be I should have kept the plant and got rid of the fish...

Very nice photo in beautiful soft light and colours: super macro!!!
