Friends, today was a lucky day for me here in Riyadh.
Three dragonflies came visiting this morning -- one female and two males.
I had stowed away my camera a few weeks back. With the day temprature hovering around 40 degrees plus in the shade these days, life comes to a standstill here in the desert. Even the hoverflies that had frisked around for about a month in the little patch of our greenery had disappeared.
The moment my gang of helpful kids informed me of the presence of two dragonflies in our compound, I hastily pulled out my gear and rushed to my neighbour's window. By now, he is quite used to my unannounced appearances in his drawing room:-).
I wasn't happy about shooting the two dragonflies perched on a cable outside the window -- a male and a female. Still I shot away frantically until a smaller kid said he had seen another one perched on a plant in the garden.
I rushed to the spot to find a purplish red dragonfly perched primly of top of a twig. When I started shooting at close range, it took off a few times but returned to the same spot again. I knew then that I had a friendly dragon at my disposal. I shot like mad from every angle and the insect behaved like a professional model, changing stance frequently.

Here is the first picture of it.

I have not been able to ascertain its ID, so any help would be highly appreciated. It could be a male Trithemis aurora, though I am not sure yet.

Hi Ram

Another beautiful dragonfly - with wonderful colours. The light on the eyes works very well. I also like the background - it focuses attention on the dragonfly.

Hello Ram,
I'm so glad you experienced some "wildlife" today. The heat must be very tough there now.I'm amazed that you get dragonflies in that dry climate.
I think this may be the same species as I captured in Singapore, Libellulidae Trithemis aurora. Perhaps you can check it a bit more on the net.
Anyway, this is a great capture of this beauty in a nice pose with sharp focus on the head and in nice colours which look great against the brown background. Well done!
Many thanks and I look forward to the next shot! Ulla

Hi Ram,

I loved your notes. It's good to have those young spotters! The colors of this dragonfly are beautiful - and the face is wonderful. The details on the transparent wings are shown off very well. You caught him in a good position.

Hi Ram

Another superb shot and composition from you and a lovely dragonfly :)
This really is a very beautiful subject and its colors shine nicely from your picture.
I love the details here - especially on the head and big eyes of your subject - and the very correct exposure here.
The POV is also great and it gave you plenty of clearance for the BG. The DOF is a little shallow for my taste in photos shot from this angle, but it does well to focus all the attention on the head.
Overall: a very good work! Looking forward to some other beautiful posts :)

Bravo and TFS

Hello Ram,
Fine capture of a fortunate encounter!
All the technical prerequisites for a good macro are fulfilled in this dragonfly shot, Ram, the focusing being centred on the head, so that the OOF body and wing tips look less important. The BG is very pleasing.
The ID seems correct.
Very nice post!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

hello Ram
What a beautiful photo, I love the colors that has this dragonfly. The composition, with the zone of the head in focus and the rest of the body defocusing progressively in addition to the beautiful BG, is really estupenods. Congratulations!

Hi Ram,

Superb shot of the Dragonfly, I really like the pose you have captured and the composition is excellent, very good details and lovely colour tones with a great blurred BG.

TFS Hilary :o)

I have to say I have not seen a dragonfly of this color before, what a lucky capture. Can't help with the ID, I will look around to see if I can find something.

Hi Ram

Wow, what interesting colour reflections and display you have captured on this specimen. I am sure it must have been a very welcome visitor.

I like the composition with the wings running through the diagonal and the body lying on the opposing axis. The colours and details are great, but it is a real pity that you could not push for a little more DOF (±f/11) in order to get those lovely wings within the focus range. Obviously available light must have played a role, but while using the fill-in flash one sometimes can be much bolder and push the ETTL abilities of the camera/flash.

Just one question though. What has you neighbour got around his house that all the insects and birds tends to flock around there? Maybe you should have a motivational chat with the chap and encourage a swap of residence (chuckle).

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Ram,
A nice job with the fill flash exposure. Amazing colors in this dragon! Well composed and isolated on the twig. Nice sharp detail in the head area. A beauty!

Hi, Ram, again.
Pictured scene is simply amazing: arrangement of pictured objects and wonderful colour palette. Only one point disturbs me it is some softness of the dragonfly image. Now I usually use ISO 400. It allows me to apply small aperture value and larger DOF. Up to f/16 BG as a rule is well blurred. I like this shot so much and my best wishes.
Alexei.

This is such a nice specie Ram! It is pink and has great eyes! It looks like a ballerina! :) This is a very good capture with excellent details and a wonderful pose from your charming model. Well done and thanks!
