[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

The Trithemis aurora I photographed here in Riyadh has grown into a small theme in my mind, especially in view of the fact that appearance of this species of dragonflies in a dry and arid desert area could be a matter of considerable interest, especially for those who do not look at nature photos on TN for their mere technical excellence alone.

As I mentioned in my note with the first post of this dragonfly which I was able to identify (thanks to Ulla), there were three of them together that morning – one female and two males. I also mentioned that I first tried to shoot them through the window of a friend’s apartment because they were closer to it, perched on cables. Quite a few shots were a washout, mainly because of the distance involved. I had to use my 70-300mm for the job. Since I do not have a Teleconverter for this lens yet, the limitations of shooting with it were manifold. I tried everything I could including the built-in flash and combinations of shutter speed and aperture value. I was mainly interested in the female because it looked quite different from the male in that it does not have that red/purple colouring on its body which distinguishes the male of the species. Fortunately, a couple of shots turned out to be quite satisfactory and I am sharing one of them today.

It is not as good a picture as my previous ones, but since it represents the female of the species within the ambit of this short theme, I hope many of you would overlook the technical shortcomings in it.

The detailed note on the species is appended to my previous post which you can have a look at here.

Best regards to all.

Hi Ram,
there's a perfect pale BG along with a great composition and DOF that brings out the dragonfly really well.
Well done,

very well taken the detail is wonderfull as I always find these difficult to photograph, though maybe my latest entry is ok even if the dof is'nt, and you have interesting and usefull notes as well.

Hi Ram

I think this is one of your best dragonfly shots - the sharpness combined with the neutral background really bring out the detail of this insect. True the eye is not as sharp as in some of your earlier shots, but overall it is excellent.

What a vivid dragonfly you took here! Great use of flash made the photo impressive details and colours. Great diagonal framing and amazing and different bg. In my opinion, this one is better then the former post! Should be in my favourite!
Thank you Ram and congratulations!

Hello Ram,
Marvelous picture. Spot-on focus and exposure. Lovely pov and composition. Colors are vivid. Details and texture are well presented.

You present the female Trithemis aurora at her best, Ram.
You show her with excellent overall sharpness, depict her characteristics from the best POV and put her in a very pleasing composition involving diagonals set by her body, perch and her wings. This is then backed by a fine sandy-coloured BG.
A top class post!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Ram,
Beautiful capture, with very effective diagonal framing and very attractive POV. Colour are brilliant but [if I'm not being let down by my eyes]there is something wrong with the sharpness. Are you using some sort of noise reduction post capture? Some programs tend to be detrimental to image sharpness. Exposure being one of the strong points of the d200 is right on the button!!

Hello Ram
What a great shot of this wonderful Dragonfly,Great details and composition,
Perfect lighting and DOF, Superb shot.

Good Luck

Hello Sir,
Your atttempts definitely have not gone in vain.It indeed is a beautiful picture. Good colours and details.Even though this shot has failed to bring out the details that macro has done in your previous shot, the pale background and the position of the dragonfly makes it a remarkable shot.TFS,

Hello Ram,
I just discover that beautiful dragonfly. I'm amazed too to see that there are dragonflies even in a desertic country. This one is of great beauty and you have done well, even more, considering the difficulty to make the shot.
best regards

Hi Ram.
Great picture, my friend. I have no doubts. Tremendous diagonal composition, Details and sharpness of whole image of the dragonfly is simply outstanding as well as the colour reproduction. Both POV and DOF are excellent too. Colour palette is beautiful at highest level. Your shot is brilliant proof of your (and my) Sigma lens. Bravo, my friend. My congratulations. It's my favorite shot. Thanks a lot.
