HOVERFLY WITH SPECIAL EYE
Eristalinus sepulchralis (Linnaeus, 1758)

This Hoverfly was an enigma to me until I saw its picture posted by Fartash recently (See here ). I followed the link he provided and was able to confirm its ID as Eristalinus sepulchralis.
Shooting this extremely restless fly was not easy. It never sits still. I was able to manage only one picture of it which I am posting today. The image succeeds in capturing the special feature of this insect – its mottled eyes.

The insect belongs to the Syrphidae family and here is a note on this family in general:

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies.
As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring on flowers; the adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year, and so aphid-feeding hover-flies are being recognised as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for use in biological control. Adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.
About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described.

The image was first converted from raw into tiff, treated for noise and then cropped for TN.

Thanks and regards to all.

Buenisima la fot. El detalle de los ojos es genial.
¡Enhorabuena!

I know what you mean Ram.
It is sometimes very frustrating trying to shoot a restless hoverfly.
Still, you persevered and the resulting image is great.
A beautifully clear macro with a great POV. Excellent job.

Hi Ram,

another interesting shot with informative write-up.
This Hoverfly, is not as attractive as those beautiful Dragonflies.
The detail however is excellent, so clear and sharp.

Gary

How intriguing are the lines and spots. A very unusual find and very different than many insect picture I have seen. It is almost a picture within a picture. Such an elusive creature and you had the tenacious mind to capture it...or was it simply patience. Either way it is interesting in design.

And this hoverfly shot is no exception. Superb clarity and detail in this front POV set in a fine compostion to show the unique eyes of Eristalinus sepuchralis to their best advantage.

Hi Ram,
Amazing eyes. You keep finding them. Everyday has been so educative and a host of new species seen, even though through photos. Perfect POV, focus and lighting. The details of its body are extraordinary. Beautifully done. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Good detail, DOF, & POV Ram, and I like the composition. I do appreciate the degree of difficulty..I've been known to chase a few of these guys around before :)
The colors of the fly are a little bit flat, over-powered by your flash IMHO. Have you tried diffusing the light from your in-camera flash head?
Well done.
