[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), October 21, 2006, 5.40 PM

I look out the kitchen window towards the tiny garden in the backyard. I do it habitually while brewing my evening cup of coffee. There is a solitary sunflower plant still growing small sized flowers. That is almost the only colour left in the autumn days of the year here, looking incongruous against the backdrop of an unevenly plastered wall painted sky blue.
There is an unearthly kind of glow in the evening light falling on the yellow sunflowers today. Suddenly, I sense something dramatic about the sunset. I must look at it immediately before it is gone.
I rush to my outer gate embedded in a wall nearly 15 feet high and throw it open. It faces west. Just across the street is another one storey villa that dominates almost 80% of the view through the gate.
The view of the sky above the villa stuns me speechless. It is a view I have never seen before in this city. The sky is a collage of stunning colours streaking across the darkening blue sky, almost like the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)!
I dash inside the house and frantically rummage for the camera stowed away almost permanently in my cupboard. After using it extensively during my summer break in India, I thought I would not need it for the next few months in this country where taking pictures in public places is forbidden.
The time is too short to rush to the roof of the building, so I aim and shoot the sky in quick succession, not having enough time to choose the settings. Six shots in a row, most of them in the landscape orientation. I just cannot avoid the upper part of the villa to get the angle of light right. I am scared too; if someone pops out into the street and sees me taking pictures through the gate of my house, I could be in trouble.
Fortunately, the street remains deserted until I am finished, by which time the night has started gradually taking over, erasing the collage of colours in the sky.

I am posting one of those magic moments today in the hope that you would find some enjoyment in this forbidden fruit of sorts.
For the life of me, I just couldn’t get that house in front out of the way during PP work.
A Workshop to give you an idea about my shooting position through the gate is also posted here.
Thanks for looking and bye.

Hello Ram,

I really enjoyed reading your note, it reads like a page in a novel. You're a good writer. I was not aware of the fact you can't take photos in a public place in Saoudi Arabia. That must be hard for a photographer like yourself. Thanks for the interesting note! I also like the picture a lot, the colors are amazing. The workshop is interesting aswell. TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi Ram

What a thrill to our eye: such a magnificent display of colors and tones!
Indeed, it's not everyday one gets the chance to phorograph such an impressive display of light reflection and difraction.
Unfortunately the POV wasn't in your advantage...but you did great under the consequences.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Ram,
This really looks like magic. I love reading you note. It really touched me and made me forget that I was sitting behind a monitor. I didn't know that you are not allowed to take photo in a public place in Saudi Arabia. How are you coping with it?
TFS,

Hi Ram,
This is an amazing picture of an amazing phenomenon.
Reading your notes and knowing of your circumstances just makes this sight even more magical.
You did a great job of capturing those magnificent colors in the sky.
You should not worry about the building. I think it actually anchors the lights.
Did you ever figure out what caused that celestial light show?
Thank you so much for sharing this very special experience. : )

Hello Ram,
Just notice that you were back in Riyadh. This is a fantastic evening sky. Great act of nature. Very well done and TFS.

Hi Ram,
This is a very touching story. I agree with Pieter that you really are a good writer and with Niek; I also forgot for a while I was behind my monitor :) This sky is amazing, rarely seen this way. It is so spectacular that we forget the building here. I like this contrast between those strong colors and exposure is very good. I also liked the picture in WS and again, those very interesting notes... Thanks a lot,
Claudine
