Melitaea caucasogenita, (Verity,1930)
Transcaucasian Fritillary

Turkish Name : Kafkasyalı Amannisa Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Eastern Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia-(Ardahan).

Distribution in the world: Turkey, the Caucasus-Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Living Area: Alpine and subalpine grassland. Above sea level, up to heights at about 1.700-2.500 meters. Flowery grasslands; grassy openings in areas.

Flight time: One generation per year. Mid-July to early August.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Is not known. Insufficient data.

Description-Notes: Typical locality: Helenendorf- Hanlar, Azerbaijan. A very local and rare species with an extremely restricted range in Turkey. Uppersides are most similar to False Heath Fritillary; closely resembles Heath Fritillary. False Heath Fritillary: Undersides double marginal line darker; postdiscal orange fascia of underhindwing with dark dots. Heath Fritillary: Larger and brighter, Upperhindwing without dark suffusion (except for the ssp. lucifuga; there also seem to be slight differences in genitalic structure. Females make laying on the bottom side of leaves.

Wingspan: 34-36 mm long.

Awesome shot!! I'm sure you had a big smile on your face when you brought this image up on your screen. Stunning colors and excellent detail in this well composed photo. Not only is the butterfly a knockout, but the flower is gorgeous also. A winner in my book!!
