[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Between September 9th and 16th, our search group, formed by Professor Mustafa Sözen (spalaxtr), his students Ferhat Matur, Faruk Çolak and me, visit to east Central-Northeastern Turkiye. Our field trips aimed to establish small mammal (rodents and insectivores) fauna. However, Mustafa and me were busy with taking bird photographs in space time.
We met many prey birds along road from Niğde to Erzurum. Most of they belong to Buteo rufinus and Falco tinnunculus.
At the early morning of September 13th, when we went to check our Sharmann traps, we saw this elegans and beautiful prey bird, Accipiter brevipes (Severtzov, 1850) – Yaz Atmacası [TR], Levant Sparrowhawk [EN] on the top of bush of wild rose (Rosa cf. canina).
This bird is a species of the diurnal prey bird family Accipitridae of the order Falconiformes, which is represented by 40 species of three famlies in Turkiye.
By one of my previous post, I already introduced Turkish species of the family Falconidae and its single genus Falco.
Other family is Pandionidae with single species Pandion haliaetus (Linnaeus, 1758).
Last family is Accipitridae and it contains 28 species in Turkiye. Three of these species are included into the genus Accipiter Brisson, 1760:
** Accipiter gentilis (Linnaeus, 1758) – Çakırkuşu [TR], Goshawk, Northern Goshawk [EN],
** Accipiter nisus (Linnaeus, 1758) – Atmaca [TR], Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Sparrowhawk [EN],
** Accipiter brevipes (Severtzov, 1850) – Yaz Atmacası [TR], Levant Sparrowhawk [EN].
