Mountain Alcon Blue / Navy Argus
Turkish Name: Rebel’in Korubeni Kelebeği
Distribution in Turkey: The north eastern region of Anatolia.
Distribution in the world: Central Europe, Southern Europe, Caucasus region, West Asia, Central Asia, North Asia.
Living Area: Maculinea rebeli inhabited mostly only small-scale habitats in Alpine and Subalpine limestone grasslands between approximately 1500 and 2100m asl.
Flight time: A single generation. Depending on the altitude, from late June to late July.
Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Gentiana asclepiadea- (Willow gentian) and Gentiana cruciata-(Star Gentian) feeds.
Description-Notes: A small butterfly. Male is deep blue with black borders; female has very broad sooty black borders, with blue restricted to basal area. Both sexes are gray-brown, with a marginal row of pale gray spots and strongly curved postmedian band of white-ringed black spots on each wing. Is very difficult or even impossible to distinguish alcon'dan Maculinea. A controversial species. 1000 meters below the first, "Maculinea alcon". 1000 meters above the first, "Maculinea Rebel" is considered as. Caterpillars are protected by ants.
Endangerment : Strongly endangered.
Endangerment Factors : The mostly small-scale habitats are overgrazing (trampling).
Wingspan: 32-36 mm long.
Origin of the name: Alkon - artist from Sicily, the hero of Ovid. In Roman mythology - known doctor.
Similar Species:
• Alcon Blue – Phengaris alcon, (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
• Large Blue – Phengaris arion, (Linnaeus, 1758)
• Scarce Large Blue – Phengaris teleius, (Bergsträsser, 1779)
