The Sooty Orange Tip
Turkish Name: Zegris Kelebeği
Distribution in Turkey: Aegean, Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, Southeastern Anatolia, Altitude: 500-2750 meters
Distribution in the world: West-Europa-(Southern-Spain), NorthWestern-Africa-(Morocco), Southern West-Asia-(Ukraine). Caucasus - (Georgia-Azerbaijan-Armenia). Southern-Russia, Middle East ..
Living Area: Above sea level, lives at altitudes of 500-3000 meters. Open slopes, valley slopes. Hot stony slopes and damp valleys in mountains ; also near streams in steppes.
Flight time: For a year one generation is developing. Flight occurs, depending on the altitude, from late - April to early – July. They spend the night on flowers.
Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, feeding on plants and develop mainly Crucifers (Cruciferae). The caterpillar is hibernating.
Description-Notes: Type Locality " Ukraine / Sevastopol). Very rare, very local. A midsize butterfly. Male is white , large oval orange subapical spot on forewing is enclosed with black. Female is similar, but orange subapical patch is less conspicuous. Both sexes have yellow forewing tips; hindwing is marbled green, yellow and white. Also, conspicuous crescent-shaped black forewing discoidal mark is visible on both sides. This fast-flying butterfly.
Wingspan: 40-48 mm long.
Origin of the name: Euphemia (in translation - "good glory"), the nymph of the mountain Helikon, the daughter of Hephaestus and Aglaya, the nurse of the Muses. She was tempted by Pan from whom she gave birth to Kronos (Lviv, Morgun, 2007; V. Savchuk's personal message, 2012).
