INSECTA-LEPIDOPTERA-LYCAENIDAE
Cigaritis cilissa, (Lederer,1861)

-Common Name : The Lesser Leopard Butterfly / Levantine Silver-line

-Turkish Name : Akdeniz Şeytancık Kelebeği.

-Distribution in Turkey : Southeastern Anatolia

-Distribution in the World : The species is common in the Middle East from Turkey to Northern Iran and Iraq , in the butterfly country common in Lebanon, Israel and Syria.

-Living Area : This butterfly flies scrub oak, rocky cliffs and stony mountain slopes up to 1,800 meters above sea level

-Flight time : Cigaritis cilissa lies in one generation from Late-April to mid July, according to altitude.

-Food Plants of the caterpillar : The caterpillar's life passes through the anthill.

-Description-Notes: Typical area," Mount Meron " Israel. Very similar to Large silver-Line but obviously smaller. It is described as a rare and local species throughout the global distribution area. The female lays her eggs on shrubs and trees, near the ant nests of the Bobbi type. The egg is white and its shape is characteristic of the egg whites (hemisphere and netted).
From the egg emerges a crimson caterpillar with a dark purple head. The larva secretes sweet fluid from glands in its body. This liquid is a delicacy for ports. The larval and pupal lifestyles and interactions between ants and larvae are still foggy. Research on his lifestyle is currently underway. Initially, it was found that the lava ant leads the larvae to the nest, keeps and feeds them, and the larvae depend on it, almost completely.

- Front Wing Lenght : 28-30 mm long.

-The origin of the name : Cilissa was the nurse of Orestes who, when Aegisthus (the murderer who wanted to destroy Agamemnon's line) tried to strangle the baby, placed her own son in Orestes cradle. Orestes was saved (though her own child died) and grew up to kill Aegisthus.- https://www.paleothea.com/Humans.html

-Endangerment factors : Large-scale ongoing agriculture concentration. Overgrazing has been recorded as the main threat in habitats. For these reasons, the species is classified as Endangered.
According to IUCN Red List Criteria categorized as Endangered-[EN]

-Similar Species :
• Large Silver-line - Cigaritis maxima (Staudinger,1901)
• - - Cigaritis uighurica (Kemal & Koçak,2005)

Hello Seyfi,
What a wonderful specie with amazing colors. Never meet it. My country is far north from the areas this butterfly is living.
