Lesser Marbled Fritillary

Turkish Name: Küçük Brentis Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Kırklareli and Ardahan.

Distribution in the world: Northern and Central Europe and eastward to Japan.


Living Area: From sea level to 2500 meters altitude. Usually prefers dry grassy areas.

Flight time: June to August.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Filipendula, Rubus; sanguisorba officinalis; Spiraea aruncus; Urtica species fed develops.

Description-Notes: Black marginal border on hindwing upperside is relatively enrire and continuous; on Marbled Fritillary black marginal spots at vein-ends are larger and discrete. "Brentis" species, all of them are very similar to each other is very difficult to distinguish. The basic determinants of differences in wing underneath. Different kind of colors, especially beneath the wing will help in determining.

Wingspan: 38-42 mm long.

Similar Species:
• Twin-spot Fritillary – Brenthis hecate, ([Denis & Schiffermüller],1775)
• Marbled Fritillary – Brenthis daphne, (Bergstrasser, 1780)
• Mofidi’s Fritillary – Brenthis mofidii, (Wyatt,1968)

Mythological: Ino - ΙΝΩ,: Leukothea (or Leucothea) was a sea goddess who aided sailors in distress. She was once a mortal princess named Ino, a daughter of King Kadmos (Cadmus) of Thebes. She and her husband Athamas incurred the wrath of Hera when they fostered the infant god Dionysos. As punishment Hera drove Athamas into a murderous rage and he slew his eldest child. Ino grapped the other, and in her flight leapt off a cliff into the sea. The pair were welcomed into the company of the marine gods and renamed Leukothea (the White Goddess) and Palaimon. Leukothea later came to the aid of Odysseus when his raft had been destroyed by Poseidon, and wrapped him in the safety of her buoyant shawl.
