Euphydryas aurinia, (Rottemburg, 1775)
Marsh Fritillary

Turkish Name : Nazuğum Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: North Anatolia (Central Anatolia region north of the Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia Region Marmara Region and the north.

Distribution in the world: The Mediterranean coastal countries, including Scandinavian countries in the region up to a wide experience in the field.

Living Area: Sea level, with up to 2200 meters elevation wet meadow areas, warm and flowery areas are seen.

Flight time: Mid April - Mid July.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Scabiosa isetensis, Succisa pratensis

Description-Notes: This butterfly is primarily a wetland species as its modern name suggests. Upersides are brightly marked with orange, pale yellow and brick-red. Note the dark borders and row of whitish hindwing submarginal spots. Hindwing orange postmedian band contains a row of block spots; spots on overall look. Antennal club is black except for the tip.
Colonies of this butterfly are known to fluctuate wildly in numbers. It may be present in some numbers one year, for the population to crash the following year before recovering as unexpectedly. This species does not do well in adverse weather conditions and also suffers greatly from larval parasitism by an Apanteles species of wasp. Unfortunately, this charming butterfly is one of our most threatened species and has suffered severe declines in recent decades.

Male 30 - 42mm,
Female: 40 - 50mm long.
