Fabriciana niobe form eris (Meigen, 1829)
Argynnis niobe, (Linnaeus, 1758)
Niobe Fritillary

Turkish Name : Niyobe Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Turkey is anywhere.

Distribution in the world: Wide spread in Europe and temperate Asia, Fabiciana niobe may not always be common but still quite regularly be seen in uncultivated open areas near forest borders. Afghanistan, Western Europe, and even up to the regions of Western Siberia.

Living Area: Above sea level, can be seen at altitudes of 3000 meters. Dry meadows, forest paths, forest clearings, glades.

Flight time: One generation. Early May - Late July at lower elevations; woodland.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Viola canina-(Heath Violet), Viola-(Violet), Viola tricolor-(Wild Pansy) plants fed.

Description-Notes: A widespread species. I suspect it is often overlooked as it is so similar to the High Brown Fritillary, though black markings are generally smaller. Easily identified by its cream and yellowish underside of its hindwing. There is a small black dot in basal area, which is often dusted with greenish scales. Note that postmedian band has rusty spots, some with light centers. Absence of silver spots below easly distinguishes this species from High Brown Fritillary and Dark Green Fritillary.

Wingspan: 50-65 mm long.

Similar Species:
• Dark Green Fritillary - Argynnis aglaja, (Linnaeus, 1758)
• High Brown Fritillary - Argynnis adippe, (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
• Silver-washed Fritillary - Argynnis paphia, (Linnaeus, 1758)

Niobe (Ancient Greek: Νιόβη) :Niobe, "Phrygian" or even "King of Phrygia, known as", but the country of Phrygia, the most western end of today, between Izmir-Manisa Yamanlar Spil Mountain and around the mountain of the same name, but very little trace of the present day is based in the city has reached the Sipylus ruled in the local officer, Tantalus' s and his wife Dione's daughter ..

Merhaba Seyfi,
Fine capture of niobe. Form eris is not common!
This is not a common species in Sweden either.
The sharpness, natural colours and BG show this butterfly perfectly from the best POV for the closed wing pose.
Thanks and best regards,

Hello Seyfi,
Missed this fine picture of A. niobe which is not so much shown as A. aglaja. Your picture shows well the typical dots which allow to recognize the species.
