Parnassius mnemosyne, (Linnaeus,1758)
Turkish Name: Dumanlı Apollo Kelebeği
Distribution in Turkey: Extremely local in Aegean and Marmara regions and much of central Anatolia; widespread elsewhere.
Distribution in the world: Scattered, local populations in the Pyrenees, Central Massif, the Alps, mountainous areas in Italy, Sicily, the Balkans and Greece, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Baltic States. Its range extends across the Caucasus to the Middle East and eastwards across Iran, Afghanistan and Middle Asia to West Siberia.
Living Area: 200 - 3.000 metres or even higher. Open woodland of all types, wooded steppes and subalpine and alpine grassland.
Flight time: One generation flying from May till August depending on altitude.
Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Grasses, especially Corydalis spp. plants are fed with.
Description-Notes: Type Locality: Finland. Is a rare butterfly. A relatively large white butterfly with prominent black veins, two black spots on forewing cell and transparent wings. Female's wings are slightly grayer. Note the distinctly concave hindwing trailing margin. The forewings are whitish and transparent and have two black spots. There are some black veins. The underside is a copy of upside. In the middle of the wing there is one black spot and some black veins. There is a dark zone around the body. The egg hibernates. In spring, as soon as it has hatched, the small caterpillar starts its search for a suitable foodplant.
Wingspan: 54-64 mm long.
Major Threat(s) : This species is especially threatened by changes in the management of semi-natural grasslands and woodland. Both intensification of use and abandonment will have a negative impact on this butterfly.

A wonderful presentation of this fine looking female Clouded Apollo. The butterfly is in sharp focus and shows excellent detail. Nicely framed and displaying good exposure. The veined wings are very attractive and appear to be very delicate in texture, almost paper like. Well done!!
