[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For a long time, I have not posted a bat photograph to TN. They are main interesting animal of mine. Two days ago, I prepared this shot, but I had not uploaded since I have not enough time. It may be a simple shot, but it was a first living specimen of the species, Nyctalus noctula for me. So, I sent my special thanks to my wife Ayşegül, my son Ibrahim and my student Münir Uçak for helping when mistnetting. Also thanks to my dear friend Mustafa Sözen (spalaxtr) and his asistant Ferhat Matur from Zonguldak Karaelmas University for helping when taking photograph.
Nyctalus noctula Schreber, 1774 – Ağaç yarasası [TR], Common Noctule [EN] is one of three species of the genus Nyctalus Bowdich, 1825 in Western Palaearctic region and it ranges throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Although it has not been known commonly from Turkiye, it is the most common species of the genus in our country. Its records (only 8 records) from mainly Thrace (=Trakya), European Turkiye and a single record from Mersin Province and owl pellets record from Adıyaman Province in Southern Turkiye.
Noctule bats prefer usually live in forests, they roost in tree hallows.
Three of six species within the genus occurs in Turkiye and Europe. They are identified easily by masroom-shaped tragi and middle to large sized bats.
Other species are
Nyctalus leisleri (Kuhl, 1817) – Küçük Ağaçyarasası [TR], Lesser noctule, Leisler's bat [EN] and
Nyctalus lasiopterus (Schreber, 1780) – Büyük Ağaçyarasası [TR], Giant noctule, Greater Noctule [EN].
I mist-netted this beautiful bat from Balaban (Velika) Köprüsü near Demirköy District close to Turkish-Bulgarian border. The place very important zoogeographically and famous for European mammalogists who call as Velika Köprü (Bridge). The name Velika came from Bulgarian language. Turkish name of this bridge and the stream, pass under the bridge Balaban Deresi (Stream).

Finally I dedicate this shot to another zoologist Radomir Jaskula (cicindela) who my dear friend, specialist on the Tiger Beetles (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) from the University of Lodz (Poland).
I wish you all TrekNature family happy new years.

Hi Ahmet,
excellent work done,TFS

Dear Ahmet!
First of all - thank you very much for this great dedication! It is a great honour for me :)

I have to say that I have never seen this species in the wild even if it is not very rare also in Poland (but still I hope to meet it some day :>). The portrait is really good, with fine, sharp details and vivid colours. I am also very impressed in detailed and very informative note. It is more than interesting :) By the way, in Polish name of this species is borowiec wielki :)

If you agree I will add this photo to two themes: bats and bats of Europe (even if photo was taken in Asiatic part of Turkey it is still present in many other regions, including great part of Europe :>)

Once again thank you so much for this dedication!
Best greetings and all the best in 2008!

Hi Ahmet,
Now it is something related to your subject of research. Very nicely composed and excellent details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year 2008.

Hola Ahmet,
Your being an expert on bats is evident from this excellent rendering of a rarely photographed species, your POV and eye contact are perfect, the flash illuminated specimen is absolutely in focus thanks to the deeper DOF obtained with f/8. A very good scientific portrait indeed!

Hello Ahmet,
Looking back at your gallery I've missed this cute little one! Very well captured in beautiful light showing up the big ears and the soft coat very nicely. Excellent sharpness and fine colours. It's a pity it's so hard to see them, they're fascinating animals.
Many thanks, Ulla

Salam Ahmet. Your bats are all amazingly captured. How did you focus this mammal in the dark? So sharp and very good dark background. TFS and best regards. Jusni
