Long legged Buzzard ( Buteo rufinus ) TR : Kızıl Şahin
The Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus) prefers the dry open plains of Turkey, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary and feeds mostly on small rodents, although it will also take lizards, snakes, small birds and large insects.

It is similar in appearance to the Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus), but larger in size (approximate length 60-65cm / 24") and more robust. There are many different colour forms, but usually Long-leggeds have clear orange tint to plumage, red or orange tail, pale head and largely white underwings. There is usually a distinctive black carpal patch and dark trailing edge to wing. Rump and trousers are often dark or deep rufous. Plumage varies from ghostly pale individuals to very dark birds. Some plumages are almost similar to those of the Steppe Buzzard, the Eastern subspecies of the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo vulpinus), but Long-legged Buzzards have longer wings and are more like Rough-Legged buzzards or even a small Aquila eagle.

Alacalı, açık renkleri, uçarken veya tüneme halinde rahatça ayırt edilebilir. Bu kadar sık görülmesinin nedeni ise avladığı hayvanların çok çeşitlilik göstermesi, (sürüngenler, küçük ve orta boydaki kuşlar, ufak memeliler ve tavşan) ve kendisi ile rekabet edecek başka yırtıcıların (kartal gibi) azlığıdır.

Hello Cahit,

There is a nice image with this beautifull bird flying. I like the light falling on bird's head and especialy the eye with it's nice colors. There is a fine contrast betweeen bird's plumage and the sky.

A wonderful in-flight shot of this buzzard. I am amazed at how clear the face is. The eye and beak are wonderful. You captured him in a marvelous position with the wings spread so nicely. Colors and details are excellent. I love the diagonal composition.

Excellently composed and captured. I notice you have many interesting birds-in-flight images, which I find very difficult to accomplish.

In the U.S. our buzzards or vultures have no feathers around their heads to permit digging and tearing into the flesh of dead animals. So this guy surpised me as being in the buzzard family. (Yesterday you noticed this with my photo of the California Condor a member and the largest of the vulture family.)

first of all thanks for visiting my post. Next my salutation for a cardiologist who managed his time very well to present beautiful captures of the nature world. Congratulations.
This shot is so classical, it makes me think of the "Winston" . Sorry for citing , not good for the heart.
Classical diagonal presentation and superbs clarity in brilliant colours and you have exploited the light very well .
