[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today, I change my subject to insects again and you will see a rare dragon species by its 2nd post on TN.
Turkish Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) fauna, is rich almost as much as whole Europe, Ca. 110 and 120 species, respectively.
The family GOMPHIDAE is one of ten families of Odonata in our country and it consists of 14 species from 6 genera. Of these genera, Lindenia is monotypic; namely only a single species of this genus is known worldwide:
Lindenia tetraphylla (van Linden, 1825) - Bladetail, recognizing easily by its wide anal lobe.
The species is the longest gomphid, with 70-80 mm in total lenght. It has various color forms; from sandy colored to blackish.
Its main range is in Central Asia and it also distributes in the Middle East, Turkiye and Mediterranean Basin. In Europe, most of its records come from Montenegro [Karadağ], Greece and Turkiye. It is known very rarely from North Africa, Italy and Sardinia. This dragonfly is listed in European Union's Habitat Directive as rare and endangered species.
In Turkiye, it has been recorded Muğla Prov. (mostly Köyceğiz Lake) and Southeastern Anatolia (Adıyaman, Gaziantep, K.Maraş, Kilis, and Ş.Urfa provinces).
I met this beautiful species in a dry and rocky canyon, just after visiting Bald Ibis Protect Station in Birecik District (Ş.Urfa). But, it is found in lakes and slow-flowing rivers, especially large ones. It prefers reedbeds (Phragmites sp.), roosting horizontally. My locality was dry and rocky, but Fırat [Euphrates] River was near about a half kilometre.
I added another shot of this dragon as Workshop.

So, I have posted 13 species of dragon- and damselflies from Turkiye, Northern Cyprus [T.R.N.C.] and Syria to TN. These species;

Subordo: ANISOPTERA - Dragonflies [Yusufçuklar]
…..Anax parthenope, with WS
…..Cordulegaster insignis, with WS
…..Lindenia tetraphylla, with WS
…..Libellula fulva
…..Orthetrum brunneum
…..Orthetrum chrysostigma (right) & Crocothemis erythraea (left)
…..Symptrum fonscolombii
…..Trithemis annulata (Syria I, II, Turkiye).

Subordo: ZYGOPTERA - Damselflies [Kızböcekleri]
…..Calopteryx splendens amasina
…..Calopteryx virgo
…..Epallage fatime, with WS
…..Ceriagrion tenellum.

Derivatio nominis [Ethymology]: The family Gomphidae's name was originated from their pin-shaped tail "abdomen"; the genus name Lindenia refers to van der Linden, who is an Odonatologist living in 19th century. The species name, tetraphylla means four "tetra" and leaves "phylla".

Hi Ahmet,

Congratulations on a very beautiful presentation of this rarity. I'm sure I have not seen it before. The details of this Bladetail are razor sharp and thanks to your fine notes I can see how it got its name. The colors are exceptionally beautiful - I love the nice soft tones. Background and the lovely flower compliment the dragonfly perfectly. A very lovely picture and composition.

Amazingly sharp, the detail is incredible and emphasises the fragility of the dragonfly - the note is interesting.

Hello Ahmet,
Great close up, superb sharpness and depth of feild, excellent details, beautiful colors and lovely oof background.

This Bladetail dragonfly is a novelty for me, Ahmet.
I like the patterns and colours on its thorax and abdomen.
The image is also razor sharp.
Thanks for the informative note too.

Merhaba Ahmet Bey,
Çok güzel bir yusufcuk fotografı.Bu türü ilk defa görüyorum.Uyumlu renkler, netlik, keskinlik ve kadraj mükemmel olmuş.
Selamlar,ellerinize sağlık!

hi Ahmet

The BG is a good choice for showing the macro of this dragonfly although it does not provide a colorful contrast, and it has an effect of camouflage.

The angle from top-down showing a good full view of the dragonfly in sharp detail. What I like really is the placement in diagonal of the dragonfly and parallel to the branch. Good job.

Very good description in your note. It helps to understand the insect.

tfs, bill

great capture with beautiful details and good light!

Hi Ahmet

A truly remarkable shot of this Lindenia tetraphylla here from you!
I've never had the luck of seeing any dragonfly from this genus until now but just judging from photos such as yours, i consider them very beautiful! Who knows...maybe if out TN meeting next year will be held in Turkey i'll have my chance then :)

Anyway, i really like the impeccable sharpness of the details here and the excellent choice of the greater DOF.
The exposure is also very well managed and due to that, the colors came out superbly!
Very nice capture and gorgeous collection of dragonflies from you, in all!
