Sanderling/Calidris alba/ ak kumkuşu

Sanderlings are one of the passage visitors of Gediz delta while they are migrating to the north tundras of Russia and Siberia. This year they stay very long here, until early June. You can see the different plumages (winter and summer)in this shot.

(from birdguides.com)
In winter plumage their almost white, silvery plumage distinguishes them from both the longer-billed Dunlins and the smaller Little Stints. The contrasting black spot around the shoulder of the wing is another really useful feature. You have to become familiar with the size and shape of a Sanderling to confidently identify the juveniles with their spangled silver and black upperparts and the summer plumaged birds with their reddish upperparts heavily marked with black. In flight the pale wing bar is broader and more contrasting than in similar birds such as Dunlin or the stints.

Winters on sandy beaches and estuaries.

Fairly common wintering bird on sandy beaches between October-March. Passage migrants move through mainly in April-June, and July-October.

Doesn't breed in Europe (although small numbers are often present around Scandinavian coasts in summer) but is widespread as a passage visitor to coastal sites in Europe and winters in large numbers in some estuarine areas such as up to 4 000 in Morecombe Bay (England) and up to 5 000 on the Waddensee (Holland/Germany)

About 23200 Sanderlings winter in Britain with a further 2 000 in Ireland.

A minimum of 17 000 pairs breed within Europan Russia.

Digiscoped with leica apo-televid x20. Crop, USM, NI, Levels and frame done on PS.
