Scorpion Fly
Panorpa communis
Length 14mm

A strange-looking insect, the male of which has a scorpion-like, upturned abdomen. Flight weak and at rest holds wings flat. Head has beak-like downward projection used in feeding; scavenges dead animals, including contents of spiders' webs, and ripe fruit. Seen May-July in hedgerows and among brambles.

Akrep sineği; erkeklerde tıpkı akreplerde olduğu gibi kıvrık bir kuyruk görülür .Erişkin akrep sineklerinin 4 adet kanatı bulunur, oldukça uzun bacaklara sahiptirler . 6mm- 25 mm boyutlara sahiptirler. Akrep sineğinin kafasında hortum gibi ağız yapısı bulunmakta ve kafasında antenleri bulunmaktadır .
Erişkinler nektar, meyveler,ölü böceklerle beslenirken , larvalar böcek avlarlar .
Akrep sineklerinin 40 a yakın türü Kuzey Amerika'da bulunmaktadır , ülkemizde de yeşil renkte 15 mm boylarında bir Akrep Sineği bulunmaktadır .
Bilimsel sınıflandırma: Akrep sinekleri, Panorpidae ailesi üyelerinden, Mecoptera'dır. Panorpa sınıfında yer alırlar .
