This pretty and rare damselfly (zygopterae), but with a look of dragonfly (anisopterae) was not easy to capture. I saw it in a mountain spring, in a pine wood, with much shadow. Finally, I went down into the spring to find the best light.

Epallage fatime (Charpentier, 1840)
Family: Euphaeidae
Synonyms: Agrion fatime Charpentier, 1840
Common names: Odalisque [En], Blaue Orientjungfer [Nl], Odalisque pruineuse [Fr]

Total body length 45-51 mm. Length of hindwing 35-37.5 mm. Eyes relatively small, hemispherical, distant, situated on the side of the head. Wings equally shaped, densely reticulated, with wholly transparent membrane except for the wingtips; the latters marked by a brown half-moon spot.
Sexual dimorphism in body coloration. Male: Thorax olive-green; abdomen from black to olive-green, covered by a blue-greyish dust-like film. Female: Thorax yellow-brown, with black strips; abdominal segments each with a broad black dorsal strip, divided medially by a yellow line, also powdered in blue-grey. Abdomen of both male and female relatively slender, slightly flattened dorsoventrally, nearly cylindrical.

Distribution: The only representative of the Oriental family, occurring in the south of the Iranian-Turanian subregion and the east of the Mediterranean subregion of the Palearctic - the European part of Turkey, south-eastern Bulgaria, Greece and Macedonia.
Habitat: Small currents of the plain and hilly land.
Biology: Larvae typically rheophilous, inhabiting small torrents with stony-sandy bottoms. Both larva and adult predators. Adults emerge in June. Life-cycle biannual. Imagines relatively good fliers.

IUCN Status: World level: NE, Black Sea Regional level: DD, Subregion level: VU
It is a rare species with localized populations, which indirectly increases its vulnerability.
This rare dragonfly is also threatened as a result of uncontrolled collecting by unauthorized amateur-entomologists.
Conservation measures proposed: Inclusion of Epallage fatime in the World List of Rare and Endangered Species.

I've never seen this specie in my life. Beautifull. I like its eyes, light stripe on body and dark tips of wings. Perfect composition and brownish colours of BG. Congratulations for capturing this rare insect.

Hi Cathrine

This is indeed Beautiful!!
I never got the chance to see a damselfly from the Epallage genus, but i'm sure that it will be a special moment - just as it was for you.
This species is, simply put, gorgeous - with its shape, lines, colors and natural contrast - it stands out so beautiful on her own. Aside that, you also managed to "place" it on a great, uniform BG that sets it off even better.
The lighting is great, the composition terrific and the presentation, top class.
Very well done!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Ciao Catherine. TFS this damselfly, unknown to me! Stunnign details and amazing compo in an intersting diagonal compo.

Hi Catherine,
I start to look up your Turkey treasures--really impressive! You did an excellent job technically, but on the entomology side (note!) too. I have a hard time with ID from Turkish specimens. Thanks for this one, Catherine.
Best regards
Dietrich

grazie buon w.end sERGIO
