Iurus kraepelini von Ubisch, 1922 (=Iurus dufoureius asiaticus) (Kraepelin’s Scorpion) [in Turk. Krepelin Akrebi]

In the night time while I was searching vipers in Cığlıkara, I encountered with this mother scorpion while carrying her Childs on its dorsum. I also attached a WS too. I used my macro ring-flash (Sigma EM-140 DG) while photographing and also I used my led head lamp for focusing.

This scorpion is one of the largest (up to 100 mm) scorpion in Europe and Turkey belongs to the family Iuridae. It is almost endemic to Turkey (Southern Anatolia) however it is also found in an adjacent island of Greece, Megisti (Kastelorizo). Basic color of carapace, mesosoma, metasoma, telson, and legs dark blackish, except for tarsus which is orange; carinae of metasoma and pedipalp black, barely distinguishable from background color. Sternites light brown; genital operculum, pectines, basal piece yellow. Essentially void of patterns. Typically pectinal tooth counts largest in genus.

Males reach adulthood after the fourth (age of 637 days) or fifth (age of 605–785 days) ecdysis, whereas females reach adult-hood always after the fifth ecdysis (age of 402–800 days). A female give birth approx. 8-10 Childs in each summer period and carry its Childs on its dorsum until the molting process.

You can find more detailed info on the species from the following more detailed reference:

Kovarik, F., Fet, V., Soleglad, M. E. & Yağmur, E. A. (2010). Etudes on iurids, III. Revision of the genus Iurus Thorell, 1876 (Scorpiones: Iuridae), with a description of two new species from Turkey. Euscorpius — Occasional Publications in Scorpiology, No. 95, 1-212 pp.

Since today’s subject is a "mother" (in Turk. "Anne"), I would like to dedicate this special shot a mother, i.e. anne:), Anne Gattlen (Anel), hoping she will accept this sonly dedication of mine:)

TFL and have a nice day!

WaaaaaW ! What a scoop my friend! I think that the NatGeo magazine will pay you for this pic.Impressive moment, fantastic quality..how you're lucky in these days! My best compliments, have a nice day and thanks to show us this pearl.Luciano

Hello Bayram,
Impressive photo. I would be very glad when I could make a photo of a scorpion. You got not only a special one, but also with children. Great sharpness, details, natural colours and POV. The photo in the WS is also very beautiful.

Superb shot, Bayram!
I never seen the scorpions children.
Thanks for sharing,
Good capture,

Ciao MBFBBB. An oustanding one here! DOF sharp and details are perfect. And superb light with great chromatic results. One of your best. TFS.

An exceptional shot Dayi! Very intriguing creatures. The composition is excellent, first class clarity too. Great use of the ring-flash, really makes everything stand out. You were quite lucky to get her while carrying her childs on her back, like something you'd see in The National Geographic. Conratulations dayi!
Warm regards,

Prof Bayram, this is marvellous!
You have captured a rare sight from nature -- a mother Scorpion carrying her babies on her back.
The picture is exceptionally outstanding both technically and aesthetically.
The light grey babies look so delicate it is difficult to imagine they can be lethally poisonous.
Thanks and regards.

Merhaba Bayram dostum,
Superb capture!
To find a female scorpion bearing her young (children) is noteworthy, but to be able to take such a fine shot as well is wonderful!

Hello Bayram,
A fantastic illustration of how this mother Scorpion cares for her young! Very well timed and showing very sharp details and natural colours. Great one in the workshop too!
Many thanks and good wishes, Ulla

Hallo Bayram
Wow, what and interesting and most spectacular sight this must have been? Truly awesome detail seen here on the mother as well as on the babies she is carrying. This is really a special image, and I am sure you must have been thrilled to find it in the place of the viper you where looking for. The centralized composition is just great and I like the detail of the groundy surface on which you captured this "family". Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hi Bayram
What a great shot!
This is one of the most instructive note and photo too about the scorpions!
Great dedication for Anne!Congratulation my friend for your great activity here!

Merhaba Bayram,
Great capture MF! Impressive details on the mother and babies and excellent management of light in difficult conditions. Interesting post also to learn about the parental behavior of scorpions! If I'm not wrong, after looking at the exellent link you provide, it is a male of the same species we met last June in Cığlıkara. Right? Thanks to Mert who was not afraid (not like me hehe), I got a good photo of him. Good evening,

I suspect that when you both study and teach about such things, your perspective is different than most, who might be more fearful than not. The addition of babies tends to make it a bit more frightening...it is analogous to the end of many horror films....one thinks the last is gone but alas...it becomes impregnated and the storyline continues.....however in my usual run on way...the quality is excellent!

Hello MF Bayram.
Very nice documentary photo! Female scorpion with her kids are not seen very often.
Excellent capture of this scorpion. Very good light.Good sharpness and very nice detail.
Best regards Siggi

Merhaba Bayram hocam,

Good evening and warm regards for this shot Bayram! Bravo!

Hello Bayram!
This is photography about! Going out, searching for subjects and when you find one than focus and try to do your best! You succeeded very well!! Amazing subject, amazing capture! As for those whom are afraid of this creatures... We are afraid of things we don't know... We should try to know them, to try to live with them... We inhabit together the Earth so we should try to do so for as long period as we can... Otherwise...

Hello Bayram,

Merhaba MF Prof. Bayram,
exciting shot that depict the habit and the natural presentation of the scorpion. The contrast of the white children on the dark mother is indeed well seen.
The red earth also offers a good canvas.

Dear little brother,
How practical to have the whole nursery on the back...
The sharp details are phenomenal, and I add your work to my theme "Juveniles".
Thanks for your detailed notes and sharing your knowledge.

Warm Greetings from the Tzaneen Dam in Limpopo, South Africa
