Pelophylax caralitanus (Anatolian Marsh Frog, Arikan’s Marsh Frog) [in Turk. Anadolu Ova/Bataklık Kurbağası] (Male)

Today an another Anatolian beauty which appearing on TN firstly with a new locality record of the species! Therefore i could not give the exact locality at least now! Sorry for this incomplete info. Today I am presenting a shot taken from a relatively low frontal POV -I used my macro ring-flash (Sigma EM-140 DG)- showing its typical characteristics.

I am dedicating this beauty to one young herpetologist, fellow from Afyon Kocatepe University, Ömer ESER (omereser) for his kind interest my herpetological captures/studies and in thanks for his lovely dedication to me with a beautiful endemic mountain frog, Tavas Frog as a 1st on TN! Thank you Ömer for the lovely dedication once more.

TFL and have a nice weekend!

*****************************

Anatolian Marsh Frog is an endemic species of Turkey which is mainly widespread in the western parts of Central Anatolia (Konya, Ankara & Eskişehir provinces). It also known from some eastern parts of Aegean region, including Afyon, Isparta, Burdur, Muğla & Denizli provinces) and the northern parts of Antalya province (Mediterranean region) up to elevations approx. 1800 m. The specific name came after Beyşehir Lake, the former name of which is “Lake Caralis” which is the type locality of the species.

It is strongly aquatic, inhabits lakes, pools or slowly flowing streams with much or less vegetation. It stays in close proximity of water bodies. Food spectrum comprises various invertebrates, and, occasionally, also small vertebrates. The biology, general body shape and size (SVL up to 13 cm) are similar to other marsh frogs (Euro-Caucasian Common Marsh frog Pelophylax ridibundus, Asiatic Levantine Marsh P. bedriagae and European Edible frog P. exculentus) by having dorsolateral skin folds, vertebral stripe (approx. 50%), two vocal sacs in males and no temporal stripes. However, this species is easily distinguished from all other similar species by having the vermiculate orange coloured maculations covering the venters, including the ventral aspects of head, fore and hind extremities.

Deniz

Bayaram Bro,

this is a lovely capture of an amazing amphibian with innovative PoV. I loved this PoV. This Frog is also amazing with lot of lovely patterns near its throat. Lovely eyes. Very nice composition!

Merhaba Bayram Hocam,

Selamlar,
Ömer.

Certainly the model is not the best of beauty, but the POV is exceptional. The colours of the amphibian's belly and the eyes turned upward are just that extra touch.

Merhaba Bayram,
I'm sure this handsome Anatolian frog is a charming prince waiting for a kiss... He is just a little bit pretentious... usual for a prince. It is a great capture, so well composed from a low POV, with the blue sky and the fanstastic shape of the throat. The fingers move freezed is also fantastic. He is so alive on my screen, for sure he will say something! Tebrik ederim! Selam ve sevgiler,
Cathy

Hello Bayram,
Great capture with superb details and excellent colours.
Very nice composition and clarity. Perfect focus.
Congratulation and have a nice weekend!
Marius.

Excelente trabajo.

Dear Barea,

Long time no see. I truly hope once you'll return to TN. This pic is fantastic, great eye contact with the model. :) Even you used f/25, DoF is shallow - but this is good this way. Incredible color contrast and very interesting abdominal textures! Just wonderful - as the whole photo. Congrats and tfs.

At the same time I'd like to say thanx for helping me in the ID of my latest frog shots. I'll post one of those images later.

Friendly regards, László
