Today, a common butterfly from the uncommon Çığlıkara Nature Reserve. They were so many there. It was a fantastic show to see their courtship, like a dance in the air. It was my first shots of this Black-veined because it doesn’t occur in Northern Europe (very rare in Belgium).

Aporia crataegi Linnaeus, 1758 ♀
Family : Pieridae
Noms communs : Black-veined [En], Gazé, Piéride de l'aubépine [Fr], Baum-Weißling [De], Groot geaderd witje [Nl], Pieride del biancospino [It], Alıç Kelebeği [Tu]

Male has prominent black veins on white wings with no black cell spots. Female is similar, but has browner veins and a variable amount of dark scales on its more transparent wings.
The Black-veined White is found in orchards and bushes throughout most of Europe except Northern Europe, North Africa, temperate Asia, Korea and Japan. This species is extinct in the British Isles around 1925.
It usually feeds on Rosaceae plants, specially in the genus Prunus. Flight time is between April and July, size is between 56mm and 68mm, and is normally found an altitudes between 500m and 2,000m.
An interesting characteristic of this species is that the female, by rubbing her wings together, loses many of her scales, resulting in an almost-transparent look when compared with the white wings of the male. The purpose of this behaviour remains a mystery.

Excellent details, good photo.

Geia sou Katherine,
This is a praiseworthy macro with lots of details to appreciate. The black veins against the white silky wings of this Black-veined White is striking, add to that the purple flower it is resting on and you have a beautiful picture. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
