We met this impressive male scorpion (about 10 cm) in Cığlıkara in June while travelling with Bayram. I suppose it is the same species than the mother with babies posted recently by Bayram here. And maybe he is the father of the babies – not Bayram, but this scorpion ;)
I must confess that I’m still scared by scorpions, but Mert (Bayram’s student) helped me to take this shot, while holding the piece of wood where he was.

Iurus kraepelini von Ubisch, 1922
Syn.: Iurus dufoureius asiaticus
Family: Iuridae
Common names: Kraepelin’s Scorpion [En], Krepelin Akrebi [Tu]

This scorpion is one of the largest (up to 100 mm) scorpion in Europe and Turkey belongs to the family Iuridae. It is almost endemic to Turkey (Southern Anatolia) however it is also found in an adjacent island of Greece, Megisti (Kastelorizo).
Despite his big size, this scorpion is of little danger to humans.

Good evening Catherine,
This is a superb portrait of this species of Scorpion, its black shades well exposed to reveal its features with excellent sharpness from a fine POV. A difficult subject in several ways, well handled by you and Bayram's team!
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Really terrific capture here, Cathrine!
Scorpions are great subjects and i really like the angle you got this one from - giving us a superb view to it's entire body and especially that pin on that tail.
Very good management of the exposure - getting maximum details form those blacks and great control of the DOF, too.
Wonderful work!

Bravo and TFS

Bonjour Catherine,
Quelle image impressionnnante ! Le noirceur de ce scorpion contribue à le rendre encore plus "diabolique". La gestion de la lumière est parfaite, cela ne devait pas être simple de trouver le réglage idéal. Bravo!
Bonne fin de semaine
Anne

What a lovely shot of this scorpion, Catherine! The beautiful earthy coloured BG is stunning and brings out the sharply detailed scorpion splendidly.
Cheers!
Goldy

Hello Catherine,
I have no experience with scorpions, since they don't live anywheres close to me here in Ohio. I have never seen one in the wild, but would love to someday.
You have presented us with an awesome shot of this particular one, filled with fine detail and beautiful natural colors. Perfect exposure and nicely composed image. Great notes too!!
Ron

Hi Catherine,

Ciao Catherine. Stunning detaisl and perfect DOF for this impressive one against the blurred BG.
