Gonepteryx farinosa (Anadolu Orakkanadı) [Eng. Powdered Brimstone]

Türkiye'nin her tarafında dağılış gösterir. Türkiye haricinde Arnavutluk, Makedonya, Bulgaristan, Yunanistan, İsrail, Lübnan, Süriye, K. Irak ve Iranın batısında, ayrıca Kafkaslardan Tacikistan'a kadar dağılış gösterir. Bitki örtüsünce zayıf, kurak ve kayalık yerleri tercih eder. Mart-Ağustos arasında uçtukları görülür.

*****************************

RANGE. Albania, Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, N Iraq, and W Iran, Caucasus to Tajikistan.

DESCRIPTION. Male fore-wing upperside is lemon yellow with slightly roughened appearance; hind-wing upperside is distinctly paler - contrast with fore-wing apparent in flight: female fore- and hind-wing uppersides are white, sometimes faintly tinged bluish (cf. Brimstone, G. rhamni). Powdered Brimstones are very similar to the Brimstone, G. rhamni. Compared to rhamni, key differences for farinosa are:

1) Wing shape: hindwing inner margin has two deeper scallops from the less prominent "hook". Forewing costa is gently curving to the wing tip, rhamni is straight for much of the wingspan.
2) Texture: the male forewing is roughened by scales giving it a dulled texture; rhamni has very short neat scales giving a shiny appearance. This is only visible on caught specimens both butterflies never rest with their wings open.
3) Male upperside forewing is allegedly yellower than the greenish hindwing. This was visible in flight but would not have been sufficient to identify it alone.
4) Antennal clubs are pink.

FLIGHT-PERIOD. Univoltine. Mid June/July: hibernated specimens re-appear March/ April.

HABITAT AND BEHAVIOUR. Hot, dry, hushy places, often on rocky slopes at higher altitudes; very hot, dry low coastal hills amongst sparse hushes of Paliurus spina-christi. In some localities, often roosts in bushes of Phlomis fruticosa.

LIFE-HISTORY. Larval host-plants are Rhamnus alpinus fallax, R. sibthorpianus, R. lycfoides graecus and Paliurus spina-christi. Ova laid at leaf-nodes on stems.

Hello MF Bayram,
Outstanding shot of these mating Gonepteryx farinosa with lovely colours and crisp details. Great lighting and exposure and the precise DOF isolates the subjects so nicely from the BG. Very pleasing to the eyes. Excellent POV and composition.Best regards Siggi

Bayram bey selamlar,

I better switch to the english language you will laugh too much. You present again an unknown species of butterfly to me, and Bayram-fashion as a couple to boot. We can nicely see a difference between male and female. The picture is excellent. The harsh sunlight yields dark shadows, but the phenomenon does not affect the animals. Bravo!

Best regards
Dietrich

Merbaha sevgili arkadaşim,
A fantastic capture, my friend, with great colours and a not easy POV on the soil. Nice to see it again (posted before...)! But I miss your notes. I don't want to speek with you about the DOF and other technical things.
G. farinosa is completely unknown for me. It seems more colorful than G. rhamni. Iyi geceler,
Cathy

Merhaba Bayram hocam,

Rudy

My dearest friend Bayram
This is a very discreet Love Torrent :-) you obviously see something I dont.
Your notes""Karaekşi (Mut, Mersin)'den bir çift"" cannot translate this...?!?

The camouflage is very interesting i.e. perfect imitation of leaves - in South Africa are Praying Mantids which look like this - perfect imitation of leaves.

I always thought this was protection against enemies - now I know this is protection against voyeurs :-0

Paylaşımın için çok teşekkürler

I wish you a good day and a funfilled week-end
icten selamlarimla
Kendine iyi bak, sevgiler

Ingrid

Merhaba Bayram
this is a great add in your "Love Torrent" serie, fine composition and superb POV, the details are very sharp and i like the color difference between the male and the female, this couple is well highlighted against the brown environment
Have a great WE, MF
Jacqueline

Selamlar Dear Friend,

A lovely capture of these beautiful mating pair of Powdered Brimstone. A very good DOF achieved with very good sharp details and also a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing and have a nice weekend.

Hi MF Bayram. I can imagine the difficulty in bringing a very good mating pair in well defined framing. You have done this many times over and the task must be enormous if it is me to do it. Excellent capture from a fine researcher and capable photographer. Well done and have a great week ahead. Best regards - Jusni.

Hallo Bayram,
wonderful picture of this pair of the Powdered Brimstone, not perfectly camouflaged here
TFS
Best regards
Maurizio

Hi Bareatom,
I miss you... forever! This pic was (is) exceptional, I know how difficult is to capture this species - although these specimens were dealing with something else instead of their safety. :) Wonderful composition and details, crystal clear sharpness, optimal DoF - simply an image to be proud of. Bravo.
Friendly regards (as forever), László
