Anatololacerta danfordi (Toros Kertenkelesi, Danford’un Kaya Kertenkelesi) [Eng. ‘Taurus Lizard, Danford’s Rock Lizard’]

As you remembered, a short time ago, I’ve uploaded a Taurus Lizard ssp. bileki pair in courtship. Today I am presenting a handsome male from Köseçobanlı (Alanboğaz), Gülnar, Mersin. A more detailed info on the genus was given here. I also attached a portrait of the same handsome as WS.

TFL and Cheers,

*****************************

*****************************

The throat in adults changes blue or red to whitish. In young’s, surpaciliary stripes are dissolved in bright spots and vertebral zone has bright and irregular spots. In adult males, there are dark dots on generally median 4 or sometimes all 6 longitudinal rows of ventral plates. Temporal scales are large and the numbers are 7-12 in a longitudinal row. Enlarged marginal plates usually are absent or in few numbers. Circumanal scales (preanal scales surrounding the cloacal split) are 10-17 in males and 10-16 in females. It is fond in mostly submontane to montane areas from the Taurus Mountains of the Burdur province in the west to the east of Nigde and Mersin provinces. It is represented with two subspecies:

A. d. danfordi - It is characterized with a blue throat in adults and also relatively higher numbers of femoral pores. Distributed in Cilician Taurus from the submontane areas of the eastern parts of Mersin province to the northern areas of Taurus Mts., Konya and Niğde provinces.
A. d. bileki - It is characterized with the throat colouration changing from the red to whitish and by having relatively low numbers of femoral pores. It is distributed from the montane areas of western Taurus range of Burdur province in Central Anatolia via Beysehir down to coastal Silifke.

In this species, the courtship primarily involves visual stimulations, such as push-ups, holding up and waving one of the fore-legs. After this initial contact, the courtship continues with a series of movements including the chasing and biting (especially from tail, sometimes from the throat and trunk) of a female. Frequently there is a minimum of physical contact between the male and female until mating actually commences. The courtship consists of two sets of interdependent reflexes, one exhibited by the male and the other by the female, through which the female encourages the male and he stimulates her. Rather than submitting to force, as with geckos, the female is generally persuaded to pair with the male by his displays and attentive behavior. A receptive female may even be the more aggressive member of a pair, approaching the male if he fails to move in her direction. If you are a facebook user and also my friend on FB, you can also watch a short movie about the courtship of Anatololacerta species captured by me.

Hi Bayram
Really nice photo of this lizard, good notes as well.
My personal opinion, I would either have taken just a face portrait or the full lizard, As you have it now, the tail is cut off?

Hi Bayram,
I am sorry I don't show up more on TN. It is not that I forgot about you. But I have other things on my mind right now: I am involved actively in a "people's movement" to fight against the construction of those gigantesque Wind turbines all over our country.

President Gül has arrived in Switzerland for a State visit. The politicians and the journalists are very impressed by him, his great intelligence and his friendly ways. Many people are positively surprised at what they learn about Turkey.

This is another of your great portraits of Turkish lizards. I hope that one day you will publish a book on Herpetology---in english :-)

My best regards to you from under a snow cover Dietrich

Özellikle çerçeve için login yaptım şu yorumu yapmaya. O ince beyaz çok hoş olmuş. Fotoğrafa diyecek ne var. Usta elinden. Anadolu faunası insanı hayran bırakıyor.

Hi Bayram,
First of all thanks for your great note. Its truly fascinating how different animals interact with one another. I surley don´t know anything about lizards but luckily I seen some of them, and caught some them on photos. They got such speed and I suppouse you must learn how they act before you can take such good photos as you have done!
Thanks!
/Stefan
