Orange Hermit

Turkish Name : Kızıl Cadı Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Central and Eastern Anatolia.

Distribution in the world: Turkey, through Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan and South Transcaucasia.

Living Area: Altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. Dry, stony slopes and steppes.

Flight time: For the year One generation. Years of butterflies observed in late-June and late- August.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Poa and other grasses plants are fed with.

Description-Notes: Type Locality, Eastern Turkey, Agri Mountain. This is a summer butterfly. Large butterfly. This is a hot dry habitat specialist. Forewing is dark brown with large, eleongated white postmedian spots; hindwing is orange. Pale sand-colored forewing below contains a rounded blind black subapical spot and another larger spot below it. Hindwing is light reddish brown, with a strongly scalloped outer margin, and an obsure pale median band; note that wavy dark brown submarginal markings that resemble a "dashed line" fail to extend entire length of the wing. Females lay eggs one at a time on dry grasses or on the rocks.

Wingspan: 50-56 mm long.

Origin of the name: Bischoff - Bischof, a naturalist from Augsburg.

Hello Seyfi,
An eye catching presentation of this beautiful Orange Hermit. It seems to be enjoying a sweet drink from the pretty purple bloom. Nicely focused against an attractive semi blurred BG and displaying vivid yet natural colors.
I can't wait until the butterflies start showing up here in Ohio. Today is the first time in months that we can finally see the ground, as the snow is starting to melt.
